Has anyone taken the anti depressant pill effexor? If so, did it help?

Question:
I've been feeling a little down lately.my doctor prescribed effexor...but I've never heard of this pill before...

Answers:
Effexor can be very helpful in treating depression, especially with somatic (physical) symptoms such as headache and backache. I took Effexor with a combination of Seroquel and Trazadone and it has worked quite well for me. But you have to remember two things about Effexor or any other treatment for depression.

First of all, the drug isn't going to do anything that you don't want it to do. The psychosomatic (mind over matter) phenomenon applies here as with others. If you want the Effexor to work, then unless you are allergic to it, as I was an SSRI like Prozac, then it'll help work in your favor. And second, I suggest that you follow up any treatment for depression, including Effexor, with therapy with a qualified psychologist. I have been successfully treated for depression with a combination of medication AND therapy and Effexor was about one quarter of the equation. May it work as well for you as it did for me.
I tried it, but it did not work for me. I tried several, and what worked for me was Lexapro. But everyone is different, and what doesn't work for one person might work for another. And you have to give it some time to work, too. Sometimes you have to feel worse before you can feel better.
Quite a few people I know have taken this pill.. It works for some and others not. As for myself I only gained weight on it so I stopped taking it. The best anti-depressant I have ever taken was Wellbutrin but then again it also got me manic but might be useful for someone who is only dealing with depression.
I've taken it. Maybe not for a long enough time to help. But then again it was my doc's idea to keep switching.

I am currently on Zoloft. I would recommend you talking to your doctor about that. It works for me.
I was on effexor, I think it helped, but the side effects for me weren't good. But everyone responds differently to different meds, what works for you may not work for another. I suggest taking it and waiting the 2 or 3 weeks to get in your system to see how it works for you. Also, if your nervous about taking it, try talking to your doctor. Also, try this link out http://www.crazymeds.org/ Go to the left hand side, where it says antidepressents, and click on effexor. It has some good info.
I used Effexor for my depression for almost 3 years and it worked pretty good. I changed meds when I found out that I was a manic depressive person.
I've been on Effexor for a while now and it works wonderful for me. I'm on 225mg and weening myself off, almost down to 150mg. When I was first diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and depression, I was prescribed Paxil. It helped some but the side effects were getting worse and there was no change in my symptoms with dosage changes. The doctor had me try Effexor and I tolorate it much better than Paxil. The only side effects I have are vivid dreams (not scarey though), night sweats, and dry mouth every once in a while. The dreams have decreased over time. The night sweats were definitely a pain at first, but those too have also decreased dramatically and I don't experience that too often anymore. My side effects on Paxil were major dry mouth and dehydration everywhere, some sexual side effects, frequent urination, and (this may sound weird) every time I went pee I never felt satisfied, like there was more in there that wasn't coming out. Best of luck to you!
