Question:
I suffer a great deal from anxiety and have health issues. Does this mean i am a hypochondriac. I am also bipolar. So where do i draw a line on being really sick or what?

Hi Kiki,

The term hypochondriac is generally different from someone who has health anxiety that is that they worrying and obsess that some minor little symptom real or imagined is really a sign that there is something sinister going on. Anxiety can manifest in all kinds of ways - some people have agoraphobia and can't leave the house, some have free floating anxiety knowing they feel anxious but are not sure why and others may have health anxiety (like me). It does not mean you are a hypochondriac it simply means that instead of interpretting some minor symptom or feeling in a rational way your brain gets stuck on it - then you have further anxiety symptoms that worry you more - and a vicious circle commences. It is ok to worry about anything in a normal way but when it is obsessional, causes great distress or stops you from living your life the way you want then you need treatment.

Unfortunately anxiety is usually a MAJOR component of bipolar. Not long now til you see your doc and you know what - alot of these thoughts you are having - that are making you uneasy - alot of the worrying about labels and diagnosis will ease off. I thnk that alot of obsessive and worrysome thinking is part of bipolar - becoming stuck on particular thoughts is a bipolar trait.

If you are unsure if you are really sick then explain to your doctor that you are unable to determine yourself the degree of seriousness of your illess and ask him/her for an honest appraisal. Remember - you are allowed to be sick and to be bipolar and to have anxiety. Just because you have anxiety and bipolar doesnt mean you are making up all illnesses in your head.

Goodluck Kiki - hang in there.
um if you have actually been diagnosed with healthproblems by a health professional, then i would have to say that no you are not a hypo-chondriac. hypo-chondriacs think that they are ill when they are truly not. this can cause alot of anxiety for them. It sounds to me like you truly are sick.
Well if you are an hypochondriac you have no actual illness. But I think their similar because you start to ge nervous thinking that you have an illness which makes you have an anxiety attack. I also suffer my anxiety and bipolar. If you're truly sick you will know. But if you just have a stuffy nose it could just be allergies.
what? hypochondriac is worrying and paranoing that you have certain illnesses that you most certainly dont have.although actually 'feeling' the symptoms.or certain that the symptoms will turn up in only a matter of minutes.
My understanding of severe anxiety is that it can cause a range of physical symptoms that closely mimic symptoms of real illness/conditions. eg migraines, stomach/bowel disorders, heart, body tension etc. And the person does have real symptoms with real pain etc. It is unfortunate to be labelled as hypochondriac as I think the underlying cause of the anxiety still needs to be discovered and dealt with either through CBT or meds & not dismissed. GP's may not have all the answers in the emotional health area.
