What is a good substitute for an antidepressant, over the counter?

Question:
I dont have insurance quite yet, I have been on lexapro and can not afford it right now. Does anyone have any good suggestions on anything that is good substitute. I exercise regularly and eat right(most of the time.)

Answers:
This is going to sound really weird, but since I have a long history of depression I'm somewhat qualified to offer you an alternative answer. First of all, try not thinking about drugs - over the counter, under the table, or otherwise. Try singing!
Not only have I gotten through my own depressive episodes, but I've passed along the advice to a friend of mine. He not only got through his depression, he got to like singing a lot and started a band. He's doing very well now. The disclaimer here is that if you have severe depression, disregard my advice and see a physician. But if you have chronic, low grade depression - try it! My favorite anti-depressant of choice is Gregorian Chant.
chamomile tea seems to give me a little grin somehow . and i'd like to point out if you watch the news these days and don't feel a little sad then that would mean you had no heart , this world can kick the crap out-of a tender spirit at times , welcome to givin a rat . peace
I found DHEA to be very helpful, I started at 50mg a day and increased each week until I got relief, my dose daily now is 150 mg, you can take as much as 300mg. quite safely.
My wife found this stuff, Natural Vitality, www.vites.com I wasn't sure, but it seems to work well, It is a packet of powder with Magnesium Citrate and fruit taste..worth a try and is safe..

Forgot to mention, you add it to a cup of hot water like tea..
Check with your pharmacist....
There may be hope yet.
Some of the Drug Companies offer medications at a reduced rate to people unable to afford them.

Also, you should check with your Dr. they often have samples for free. (usually one week's worth per package)

If neither of these work out for you, ask your Dr. if there is a different drug you might take for awhile until you can afford what you are currently taking.
