Does depression really run in the family?
Question:
Is it genetic, an excuse or because of social conditions?
Thanks
(Btw I'm not putting down people who are depressed, I know what it's like. I'm just trying to understand!)
Answers:
Hello, Wabby. Dad is happy to see you again.
Girl, was it a hard week for me last week, and this week is another hectic one. Anyway, let me see if I can answer your question.
Depression usually isn't caused by one event or thing; it's typically the result of one or more factors, and its causes vary from child to child. Depression can be caused by lowered levels of neurotransmitters (chemicals that carry signals through the nervous system) in the brain, which limits a person's ability to feel good. Depression can run in families, so a child who has a close relative with depression may be more likely to experience it.
Sad, isn't it? Significant life events such as the death of a loved one, a divorce, a move to a new area, and even a breakup with a girlfriend or boyfriend can bring on symptoms of depression. Stress also can be a factor, and because the teen years can be a time of emotional and social turmoil, things that are difficult for anyone to handle can be devastating to a teen. Also, chronic illness can contribute to depression, as can the side effects of certain medicines or infections.
It's pretty sad to know you've been having depression since at a very young age until this very moment. I wish I could have been more helpful to you.
Dad has to leave now, so I hope you get well soon.
From Dad.
it's sad, but true, that there is a genetic component to depression.
well, it is definately in the jeans.
and it also has a lot to do with the up bringing and what kind of life you had. usually families go through the same stuff, as they experience the same things at the same time, so it would be their social conditions too
so you're right...
its both
kendi
yes. it is hereditary.
yes it runs in families..my mom was treated for depression and I have been treated for over 20 yrs. now..my oldest daughter was dx. with bipolar...it's awful and people who do not suffer depression have NO idea what you go through..they think it's a phase and it will pass or they tell you to stop worrying and stop being sad...it's not about just stopping it's truly a disease and it sucks the life out of some truly great people...
there are some good websites that can really define depression to help you understand it better...
It is genetic, it can be an excuse, it can be caused by social conditions, and Clinical (pharmacologically - medicines like pain killers over many months or years cause it too.).
IT DOES RUN IN FAMILIES, iT IS GENETIC IT RUNS IN MY FAMILY TOO.
MANJUSRI
Well, yes. If you are raised in an environment with depressed people, who are always putting themselves down, never take risks, and are always pessimistic about life, you will grow up with the same behaviours.
BUT it can be genetic as well. Parents DNA is passed down to children and any kind of health problem can be passed if it affects the structure of your DNA.
With long lasting, chronic depression, the brain is actually chemically imbalance. it does not produce enough serotonin, or it does not receive the serotonin produced properly.
I know this ffrom personal experience. Depression is in both sides of my family, and my mother is a psychiatrist, who taught me well.
I can't believe everybody else has said yes so far ----- SHEESH ----- I guess it must be true ----- but I disagree and I think too many things are blamed on genes ---- but if your mom is pragnant with you and eating badly then your entire life will be affected by that -------- sugar, anger, regret and many other things cause depression --- so in my opinion, the recipes we pass on from generation to generation are the main causes of not only depression but also cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, asthma....
it is in the genes. the feel good hormone is not activated in the pituirity gland in the brain, that is why you must use medication, alcohol makes it worse

Depression can be caused by many things so all of the above is the appropriate answer. In some families a biochemical abnormality may exist and be passed down throught generations. In others, hard lives may lead to loss of hope and depression. Depression can be caused by biochemical changes due to cancer and other illnesses. Depression tends to run in my family but I've also beat it especially when I found out my tiredness and fatgue was due to apnea that took more than 25 years to diagnose. There is no simple answer to what causes depression and I strongly disagree with anyone other than a psychiatrist prescribing antidepressant medications for the first time. A thorough evaluation needs to be done as far as the cause because I also went through the route of drugs and the sedating drugs made my depression worse.
that's right
i think life can be very hard .so i think everyone suffers with depression,or soon will be.i think also it can run in the family jeans.
yep, it run in the jeans sorry :(

There are different types of depressions caused by different things. Major, clinical depressions is the type of depression that has genetic components. That said, just because a parent had it does not necessarily mean you will have it. However if you do have a genetic component, compounded with environmental factors, you stand a good chance of being symptomatic.
Other depressions can be caused by situational issues, such as work stress, family problems, and health issues.
Either way, there are many tools available to treat depression. Many things run in families but it is up to the individual to deal with it appropriately.
From what my reading and experience has shown me, genes may give you a predisposition one way or the other, but experiance and personal attitude has more to do with it.
People with HORRIBLE life experiences can still choose to be optimistic. People with a life that 3 billion people on Earth would sell their grandmothers for can still choose to be miserable.
