I believe it is the ego driving this kind of people real crazy.
If that is your case, start observing yourself from now on.
Once you begin observing what is going on in your mind, you are you and you higher self in action.There is a space, a change from the minute you star observing how your mind is playing tricks with you. The ego needs to dominate you, to confuse, you, to humilliate you, but your higher self should be the one in charge. Stop the prank of your ego. Let your ego know that you are in charge. It will be difficult in the beginning. I think medical science has done a pretty good job explaining what is going on.
Hearing 'voices' could be caused by a high/low pitched ringing sensation in the ears that most people get as they age. Twitching is a developed nervous reaction, shouting is another version of a twitch (aka a 'nervous tic'). Delusions could be caused by genetic or chemical imbalances, or just an overactive imagination.
However you have to take into account that the people hearing voices actually could be hearing them, and the people that twitch and shout may be posessed, and people with delusions are just crazy.
There is no one way to look at it. everyone will have their own opinions, because science is flawed, religion is flawed, and our knowledge of any given situation is NOT whole.
If there is no apparent physical cause, yes it would be spiritual. Demons can posess anyone without spiritual protection from God. It's like the simple concept of bullet proof vests. If you have one on, bullets are stopped. Without one, they may pass freely. Magicians and fourtune tellers have no abilities themselves, but by chanting, ranting, and raving their summoning calls or "spells" they are willingly asking a demon to perform a task. They are making a deal with the Devil. They are selling their souls. The number one rule to making a deal with the Devil, Don't.
People who hear voices are actually humans who have been turned into receivers by aliens for another world. The schizophrenic are people who
were abducted by aliens and were experimented
on. They yell from deep memories of the
experience.
There isn't any debate over this anymore. Unless you believe the Earth is flat and the sun goes around the earth and the stars are in the fixed heavens, etc. etc. When these things were first discovered, people were extremely uncomfortable knowing that the earth was not at the center of all things. Now, people are uncomfortable knowing their brains are a pile of neurons and axons and chemicals and stuff. What a fragile brain we really have. So people choose not to believe what science has proven.
The human brain has yet to be completely explored and only the people with mental illnesses really know what is going on inside.
As for science, it has done a pretty good job so far at pinpointing the causes. I personally believe that most mental illnesses are indeed chemical imblances and such, as we humans are made of the same elements as our surroundings, just put together in a different way.
I suggest everyone read the book "The God Delusion" for more perspective on how some people believe that science is wrong and divine intervention is right.
