Personally, I think it's all the stress life puts on people these days. In the old days, the husband worked and the wife stayed at home and took care of the kids (who walked to and from school cuz it was still safe to do so) and made dinner. The wife wasn't expected to drive the kids around the world to practice and rehersals, etc. The wife also was not expected to work her a** off all day and still look perfect when she got home to keep husband happy. With the cost of living going up, people are having to work more to get more money to pay bills, this causes anxiety as well. Plus, watching the news can make anyone panic - it's NUTS. I think it's just caused by all the competition in the workplace, the stress of working 24-7 to pay bills, and the loss of quality time - people don't have as much time for quality time as they used to :(
i think its just the kind of society we live in now. turn on the news and someone is scaring us about the terrorist, when we're on a plane, or train they tell us to look out for suspicious activity. on top of that we dont get enough excercise and work radiculous hours. need i say more?

I have had agoraphobia/panic attacks for over 30 years. My panic was from PTSD (sexual abuse as a child) and being married to am an who was an alcoholic. It took me a long time to get my life back. I still am in a cage, but it's a much bigger cage. I just started a support group on Yahoo. Please feel free to join.
