Are you afraid of the dark?

Question:
I am an adult and absolutely terrified of the dark. At night, I have to get my husband to walk me from our bedroom to the bathroom because I'm so afraid of the dark I feel paralysed with fear and won't go alone (I don't go outside alone either, but that's another issue).

I sleep with a flashlight beside my bed and with books on tape in the background. I hate silence! I have an over active imagination and often believe that monsters are lurking in the shadows ready to get me. (I think if they get me, they'll implant thoughts into my brain to drive me crazy, I've been through a crazy period of my life before and carried this very belief that monsters were implanting my thoughts, frightening, but not all that problematic because I was a teen. Now it would be.) Of course, it's all very irrational, but sometimes it's just so real!!

My husband says I should sit in the dark and learn not to be afraid, but oh my imagination works up! I don't think I'd come out with any sanity left!

Answers:
I know EXACTLY how you feel. You are not alone, my friend.

When my husband went out of town for some schooling, I slept with all the lights on. Then, when I had to go to the bathroom, I'd get creeped out by the uncovered window in the kitchen. So, I ran from my bedroom to the bathroom. If it's night when I get home from running errands or something and I forgot to turn the security light on or the porch light, I lock the doors and call my husband on my cell phone to come and get me. Even times like now. He's already in bed, and I'm in the next room with the light on, and I won't turn it off before I go to bed. I'll leave it on when I go.

I, as well, have a very overactive imagination. I keep a nightlight beside my bed, and one night the light burned out while I was lying in bed. You would've sworn someone was killing me the way I carried on. My poor husband was a sleep. I woke him up. He turned the light on, and I was fine. I feel blessed, though. He caters to my phobia and gives me all the support I need. He suggested the same thing your husband suggested. After the nightlight incident, he didn't suggest that anymore.
nope
get a night lite
see a therapist..find a way to overcome ur fear of the dark, like what your husband says
never no
yes yes yes i am scared of the dark too. >_<

cuz i always think there's something out there..
it sounds like you have a bunch of thoughts running wild in your head, and thats very common in people with schizophrenia. I'm not doctor, and I'm not out to affend anyone..but you may want to seek counseling becuase it sounds like you are a bit paranoid. I wouldn't recommend sitting in the dark, but I would recommend that you go to a doctor and see what the professionals have to say. goodluck to you.
Not at all...
When it is very dark and u can't see anything, think dat ur blind nd try to sense things wid ur hands nd legs so dat u don' collide anywhere.I do the same,it works.
Ooooh dont do that! I think that would just make it worse!
All the things you are describing really sound like a mental illness. You really need to go and talk to someone and find out. Most times, medications and counseling will help you. But you really need to see a Dr in a Behavioral Health facility.
I am so sorry you are having to go thru this. Please get some help and good luck!
I think your husband is very right saying that you shoult not get scared of darkness. It's feelings how people take while they are in dark. I can adjust myself but not for too long. ~~hehehe!
i hate the dark to ..i know what you meen like say my light is off and its total silince yor mind plays tricks on you like a laundry basket or sumething.. well you live with yor husband so i dont sugest tv unless hes fine with that .you could also have anxiety or ocd or sumething.talk to a doctor about this . when i get older ill prob cary a flash light to ...and the tape thing keep on dooing that it works for me but just try to come down and relax breath and no that nothing can hurt you and nothing espcialy can hurt you if your husband knows how to kick sum ***...sleep with a night light and try to talk to a docotor about this they might be more help ful.. and i dont think sitting in the dark would be a good idea coming from me whos terrified from dark to .
I am now. I used to be totally okay with the dark. Like I couldn't sleep if it wasn't dark but after seeing a scary movie a year ago I am now terrified of the dark. I have to have a ligh and the radio on.
Just go and find help with professionals. You say you cant even go out on your own? therefore ask your husband to attend all appointments with you!! you can be helped but not on your own doctors can and are willing to help but you have got to make the first move!! good luck x
I hunt my prey in the dark
I'm absolutely terrified of the dark, and I hate silence too... sometimes i keep a fan next to my bed just for noise, I don't think I'm as bad as you described though... I usually just run to my bed or keep the lights on.
I as afraid of what the darkness might hide, but i lost the fear by staying awake in bed with the lights out, just staring at the darkness, after you stare at the darkness for a bit you can see everything around you and you will end up feeling not so afraid, after that then try walking around the house, if you hear noises it may just be nothing or just your mind messing with you so just ignore that. But i'm telling you, just try doing what i did, it will work.
Yes, I am kinda scared but I'm not as bad as you, I must say.
I tend to have to have a light of any kind on in my room before bed. I've gone without and I always cover my sheets over my head so I can't see anything outside... and anything else can't see me, even though I know nothing is out there. It's your mind playing tricks on you - when you see the outline of what might normally be a pile of clothes might be... a two-headed monster or something.
When I go upstairs to bed after being on the computer, I'll try and use lights, turn them on in he next room, walk in there, turn off the lights in the other room and shut the door (if there is one) as fast as possible with the least amount of noise (really hard but I mastered it).
If I can't cause it's so late (parents... I'm a teen, what do you expect?), I'll go in the dark. I seem to have a fear of walking from the stairs to my room, which is like, 20 feet away, but there's 3 doors - bathroom which has a door on an angle, my bedroom door -straight ahead, and the spare room - door next to mine which is often open. I hate walking from a dark hallway to a dark room...

If it's a dark room and I'm with someone (like, a sleepover), I'm fine. I have no problems whatsoever, even if they're on the opposite side of the room.
It's WEIRD!

Same with the silence thing (but I don't think monsters) - I got into the habit of falling asleep with music on but that apparently makes you deaf...
So I turn it off after a little while and try to fall asleep as fast as possible.

Your husband is right, but start with a smaller room with barely anything in it, and he's in the room with you. Work it up to the point (slowly) that you can be alone in your bedroom in the dark. It might take awhile but it can work wonders!
I have been afraid of the dark my whole life . I am only 18 . i have to sleep with two or three night lights . I sleep with a flash light under my pillow for when i go to the restroom . I have to listen to music at night . i am so afraid . i can't go out after dark . I am afraid somebody is out their and or in my room and are ready to get me once the lights go out so I keep lights on . People think I am crazy but I don't care . Now I won't tell my counselor because I don't want to have her think I am crazy and need help . Do I make any since .
