Hi,
I dont think it matters how old you are. The dark is always more scarey than daytime. In the dark you cant see things as clearly and other objects create shadows which look like things that aren't really there. Im 29 now, but from the age of as young as i can remember till i was about 16 the dark terrified me. I had a regukar routine of a night before i went to bed. I would turn my hall light on, bathroom light, kitchan light, bedroom light all on. After using the toilet before bed i would turn the bathroom light out first, then the kitchen, as i turned the hall light out id run fast to my bedroom which was opposite the hall switch on the other side. Id close my bedroom door immediatly. Then id check in my waldrobe and then under my bed, and even though there was nothing under my bed i would leap onto it so my feet were no where near the bottom. The light switch to my room was right above my head, id get under the covers, snuggle upto my favourite LARGE teddy, hide my head under the covers, reach up and pull the switch. The SLIGHTEST sound would send my heart racing and it was as though my heart was leaping out of my chest, id keep my head under my covers and try my hardest to breathe as quite as i could. This went on everynight, and it was the same routine if i woke during the night. Id just lay there with my eyes firmly closed till i fell asleep. Eventually my mum got me a nightlight in my room so i wasn't sleeping in total darkness and she always left the hall light on to which i kept my door open at a crack to let more light in. I remember when i was 16 my mum came in my room while i was sleeping and turned out my light, when i woke i wasn't affraid as the hall light was still on and as the nights past my mum turned off the hall light and then the nightlight in the hall till i feared the dark no more.
SAYING THAT.....IM 29 NOW, and i must admit if i watch a scarey film and plan on going straight to bed afterwards, i dont need any lights on and i dont check under my bed but i get a creepy feeling over me and my heart races a litlle. This is just normal. Horror films are designed to scare us. Try watching a film thats romantic, a disney film or anything thats not within the horror or thriller section. Do this before bedtime and your find that it puts your mind as rest for when the lights go out.
Well, it all depends on how old you are, but nonetheless, it's perfectly normal. Some people have it in their minds that although movies are fake, it seems real. And, yes, murders and the like mostly happen at night. So feel free to feel safe by any means. Within time, it will slowly get better. If it does not, I suggest seeing someone about it. But give it time, it doesn't happen overnight.
Goodluck!
its normal to have a fear of the dark, heres some tricks,
1. get a low light night light
2 sleep with a pillow next to your body so it gives the feeling of someone sleeping next to you
3 try some deep relaxation breathing when the lights are off
yes it is normal i like to sleep next to or around people to it makes me feel safer like if there was ever someone in my house i would be all alone
Sarah is right. Humans, since the beginnings of time have feared the night as this was when the meat eaters would hunt. Then fire was discovered and so on and so on. I guess you can say it's in our genes but now we have the ability to over come it. Your mind has the ability to retain things that it last saw/heard so when up late watch horror shows first then a comedy you will sleep better. I can remember as a kid
looking under my bed because a friend had said
MONSTERS live under there. All I found was some "Dust Bunnies" my mom had missed.
I think your normal ...
