Is my mate a paranoid schizophrenic?

Question:
I have been talking to my mate there on msn and he was telling me how paranoid he feels. He was saying that he is too paranoid to go out because he thinks everyone is looking at him and that he thinks that MI5 and the CIA have files on him. When i suggested he go to his doctor he replied that his doctor would receive money from either of the mentioned above just to keep tabs on him. He also drinks a large amount of booze and smokes dope although he say's he hasn't touched dope for 3 weeks now. I don't know what to do and as i write this i am still speaking to him on msn.

Answers:
Talk to his family... tell them whats going on. They may already know!... Its not normal. Smoking pot can make you paraniod to an extent... but not THAT bad... something's wrong..
i think so. a large probability
It definitely sounds like it! He should stop drinking right away and get some help before it gets worse.
schizophrenic? not enough info.

but he is saying and acting paranoid. some drugs make this worse; some drugs can even cause this.

if/when you think he is a danger to himself or others you have an obligation to tell someone in authority.
It sounds as if your mate has some major problems. His thinking the CIA and M15 have files on him is a major hint. In addition, psychotic people often self medicate with street drugs and alcohol to mask the psychotic feelings and delusions they have. There's nothing you can do except if you feel that he is a danger to himself of someone else. That would be grounds for commitment and evaluation. You can continue to have email contact with him, but I would avoid personal contact.
Well we know for sure he's a drug attic..you might want to check him into a drug program first, before assuming mental issues.
tell him we are all lookin at him and the CIA have photos of him i know there watching me right now
dont help him or get involved or they will be watching you 2
My father was paranoid schizophrenic (and also an alcoholic as well) Get this guy to a dr. These are classic signs of either schizoprenia or serious bipolar (serious bipolar is closely related to schizophrenia and exhibit some of the same symptoms) My father used to think we were the devil, the cia was after him etc. We weren't allowed to be alone in a room with the door closed, no telephone calls, etc. Of course he had a major nervous breakdown. Please do NOT wait until he has to be hospitalized. Please do anything you can do get him to a dr. fast..he can have a "psychotic break" or nervous breakdown (my father had 3, my nephew also has had 4). And you don't want him or you, or his loved ones to experience that. It is terrifying not only for them, but for those that love them.

(Watch the movie - "A Beautiful Mind" about John Nash who was also schizophrenic - but absolutely brilliant. The best part about this movie is that it was written from the perspective of the one who is ill, rather than the other way around.)
paranoid yes - whether he is also schizophrenic is debateable.. has he had a sudden extrmemly stressful epidose in his lfe recently e.g. a marriage breakdwon or something like that. If so it is possible he is having a strong reactive depressive episode with delusions thrown in for good measuer. if not it is possible that he ia having a schizophrenic episode though strictly speaking a diagnosis of schizophrenia should not be given unless a second episode occurs. Does he have family you can talk to about this? He is self medicating on the booze at the moment but the dope definately needs to go as this will amke him worse. I syggest that if he has no family you can go to that you phone NHS direct and see if they can offer advice ; unfortunately unless he is a danger to himself or others there is not a lot you can do as it is up to family members to act. However, keep in touch with him but i suggest you do not actually go round to see him unless heis in danger of starving - then just take some food.
He does sound paranoid, but it could also be a reaction to a fear of going outside (agoraphobia). His fears could just be an excuse to not go outside. Smoking weed and drinking can make it worse, but truly paranoid people are so wrapped up in their distorted thinking they are rarely objective about it. How often do mentally ill people diagnose themselves?
He could be lying now about not abusing drugs. Or he could have stopped and now it's making him crazy, which could be a sign he has a very bad habit. How's his health? Is he eating? Sleeping? Does he have anything better to do? Is this just something to get attention? Does he want pity? This is some pretty harmless stuff. If he wants to blow up City Hall because they won't leave him alone, that's a different matter.
. If he wants to harass or cause harm, you should have the good sense to know when to quit before he hurts you. If you're not frightened and it's not a personal attack,do what you want. You can talk all you want, it's just talk. You're not going to change him, and he's probably not going to quit until he's good and ready. And if he is crazy, it may take a professional and some powerful drugs for him to take good care of himself.
You have anonymity and all that space between you. You probably don't even know what state he lives in. What can he do to you? He seems to be the victim, not you. Relax, you may have made a friend and he might calm down, and then again he might just find someone else to talk to.
im the same way...and im 16...read my question!! and someone give me some answers pleeeaseee!!
Your friend is definitely exhibiting some signs of paranoia and should get checked out by a doctor. He may be using the alcohol and drugs to cope with the symptoms as a kind of "self medication"
If this is not paranoia nothing is. Paranoia is maintaining irrational fears and acting on them. From what I read it is very difficult to cure. Many mental health experts believe the underlying cause is low self esteem. I suggest you read up on this condition and reevaluate your relationship with this person.
