Does fluoxetine affect my memory and concetration? If yes,Will it worsen or help to concetrate on my studies?

Question:
I suffer from depression and Ive just changed my medicne from Mirtazapine 15mg to Fluoxitine 20mg ( one in a morning). Ive been taking them only for two days and I must say they make me feel weird. Firstly I cant concentrate on one thing ( like reading a book!) and I am not able to memorise simple , German vocabulary. I always had problems with memorizing things but this time is defiantly the worst one. I going to start full time studies in September and I wonder if It was the right decision , as I wont be able to cope with the amount of work.Adotionaly, as you can see my first language isnt English, so things just couldnt get worse.

Im also aware of the fact that I takes some time for the mecidation to work, so the best thing to do is to wait another 2-3 weeks and see the results.

How is your concentration and memory on Prozac? Is it possible to get a degree with a depression? Thanks.

Answers:
Give the Fluoxetine a chance to get into your system and start working. If your problems still persist then go straight back to your GP. The benefits that Fluoxetine give are so much better than the feelings of depression, but the medication is best used in relatively short time spans, 3 to 4 months. You really need to identify the source of your problem and deal with it in any way possible, full time study is very demanding and you need to be able to concentrate on your studies.
I have taken fluoxetine and at first it made me a bit spaced out but after a couple of weeks it settled down.
Yes, it is entirely possible to get a degree with depression. Once you receive the proper medication and psychotherapy, your studies will go much more smoothly.

Your memory and concentration can be negatively effected by the depression itself. In that sense, the prozac (i.e., fluoxetine) will be helpful. The feelings you're having now may be largely just your body getting used to this new medication (and will end soon).

As you noted, give it a few weeks. You should notice some positive effects in a short time. If you don't, go back to the doc to talk about either a dose adjustment or a med change.

Hang in there,

Brand name: Prozac
Generic name: Fluoxetine hydrochloride

For Prozac in particular ... from John Lee's December 2002 talk. (I have the CD)

Now when I wrote this I was thinking of cirrhosis impaired liver function or people with hepatitis C but the more I look into it I discover impaired liver function is very common in our society. And we make it worse by taking drugs that stop the liver from being able to do it's work in the business of getting estrogen out of the system, metabolising estrogen.

I mentioned the P450 system in the liver, well guess what? Prozac stops the P450 system from working. So someone has estrogen dominance, they have depression, they have headaches, they are not doing well, they can't tolerate stress, they go to the doctor. They go to the doctor and he puts them on Prozac. That increases the estrogen dominance, they can't excrete their own estrogen. So here we have impaired liver function. Yeah, we do have people who drink too much but actually the liver does pretty well with that. But if you have Prozac you're damaged
