ADD but not hyperactive adult woman with depression?

Question:
I have had trouble focusing and completing things all my life. Since being diagnosed with depression and receiving medication, I was able to focus a bit more. Now that pretty much every medication has stopped working. Even when I set up the ideal place with no distractions, thoughts will rush through my head of things I need to do (PAY BILLS, return dvds, finish short stories, DO LAUNDRY, call mom, etc.), want to do and the like. I have lists, many with repeats of the same things everywhere. I never manage to do any of these things as scheduled.
In my entire life, I have never kept a room that I was not embarrassed for people to walk into because I can never finish unpacking, furnishing with essentials (i.e. bed instead of air mattress, basket instead of dresser). I want both issues gone. There's a focus on the depression because it's the more serious but both are ruining my life and serious. I'm a young adult now. I NEED to be able to focus. How do I make them fix me??

Answers:
change your medication! it has been my experience, and that of many others, that one needs to peiodically change the medicine.
I'm not sure of the answer, but if you find one, please e-mail me as I need to know.

My guess is that you need to be successfully treated for both illnesses by a professional who has experience treating people with these two illnesses.

Here is a good study on depression that might shed some light:

Also there is DNA testing available for hard to treat depression cases. The cost is about $650.

Wow! You sound like I WAS two months ago. I have suffered periodically with depression throughout my life. I have been on and off several of the meds for it. I was not finding real relief with it long term though and decided this was my year to start feeling good no matter what it took. This led to going to different docs until I found one who would listen to me. This summer I went to my first psychiatrist (my regular docs had been prescribing antidepressants when necessary). I prepared ahead of time by typing up a family history of medical issues and my timeline of medical problems and a list of symptoms and issues I was currently having. I asked her if she thought it was ok to come of my cymbalta. Told her about it not really working for me long term. Still was always tired, couldn't get but one thing accomplished around the house and such. My initial question was could the cymbalta actually be making me this tired. She immediately screened me for ADHD. I was SURE I didn't have that. I have a degree in special ed and teach these types of kids daily and knew I didn't fit the checklist of symptoms. What I didn't know was that researchers have discovered that ADHD is very different in girls/women b/c of hormones. There are completely different symptoms that are easy to overlook unless you are a doc. specifically trained to look for them in regards to ADHD. I began med. for ADHD a few weeks ago and my life has turned around. I feel happy and relaxed and the way it had always seemed to me others felt that I was never able to achieve. I have control over my appetite and my negative thoughts. My dishes and laundry get done in the same day, not even day but morning! I enjoy my child more than ever and he has commented on how good the change is. I urge you to find a doctor you trust and that listens to you. Take this book to them and urge them to read it . At the very least photo copy the checklists and take them to the doc along with your responses. Be specific in your desire. Say, "I want to try med for my ADD to see if it helps. You can monitor me and I will keep a diary of syptoms and we can go from there. Ask about the doc. knowledge with women and ADD before you make the appt.. Be your own advocate. Go armed with info and confidence that you know your body and mind best. BTW. The ADD med is in addition to the antidepressant. The combo is what is working. Blessings to you.
Sounds like you have ADD/ADHD like I do. Wellbutrin can be used to treat this but I found it didn't work so well for me. I have taken DEXIDRINE and RITALIN and they work better but in order to get these prescribed to you, you will have to get tested for ADD/ADHD. I sympathize w/ your situation b/c it sounds like me before I was diagnosed in college. It's like you have 10,000 thoughts all at once and you move from one project to the other w/o completing the first one. YOur depression WILL go away once you start taking medication for your ADD/ADHD and you will see your life improve greatly. I always equate it w/ getting new glasses. It's like you can experience things for the first time and sit still long enough to accomplish something. Good luck to you!
