Is it OK to quit taking Effexor cold turkey??

Question:
I have been taking effexor for about 7 months, it was originally prescribed to me for mild anxiety. I recently left my job, and found out that my insurance does not have the usual 30 day continuance after I left. I was wondering if anyone has ever just stopped taking effexor? If so, what kind of symptoms did you experience, how strong were they, and how long did they last?...
I currently take 75 Mg....

Answers:
Do not stop Effexor cold turkey. It is one of the WORST psychiatric medications to stop in that fashion. Read about the side effects on the internet ~ brain fog, flu-like symptoms, your anxiety getting worse.

Stop only under a doctor's care.
My wife tried to stop taking effexor cold turkey. She had some problems doing it. When she quit she said it felt like her brain was vibrating. She stepped the doses down over a period of weeks and made it work better that way. So based on that, I recommend that you try to step it down gradually if you can.
Do NEVER go cold turkey from anti depressants.i was on effexor before.i was also on a few others tabs and even when i was coming off them slowly i felt horrible.you got to bear in mind they are toxins in your body and if you discontinue them too quickly your body will go tru withdrawls and its not pleasant.you will feel worse off and if your doctor found out theyd probably put you back on a higher dose saying you "relapsed".my advice to you would be to go off them slowly if youre going off them.it sounds a bit contradictory but you will be off them quicker if you go slower cause if you come off them too quick your doc will probably put your dose up thinking your symptons are getting worse when really its the withdrawls.if you do go off them cut your dose down by about 25mg(i think they come in 25mg right??) every week and a half/2 weeks or so.otherwise it'll be too much of a shock to your body.best thing would be to ask your doc for advice on what would be the best way to cut down off them.your doctor will give you the best recommendations.best of luck but be careful
Anti-depressants can have horrible effects if you quit cold turkey. I wife had an extreme anxiety attack from doing this. Call your psychiatrist or doctor and tell them what you want to do. You will need to step the medicine down and this should be monitored by your doctor.

Good luck.
effexor is one of those meds that you need to be weaned off of, you might need to see if your doctor has some in his office that he can give to you as samples to help wean you off the med. if you just tske yourself off it you will experience the problems that you were taking the med for but the symptoms could be a lot worse and as for as how long they will last ot varies from person person to person. with my husband they still haven't gone away and he's been off the med for over a year now.
Effexor or venlafaxine is a type of antidepressant known as SSRI. Under NO circumstances should these drugs be stopped abruptly!

You will start to experience withdrawal symptoms which are most unpleasant.

Here are some side effect symtoms:
agitation, anorexia, anxiety, confusion, coordination impaired, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, dysphoric mood, fasciculation, fatigue, headaches, hypomania, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, nightmares, sensory disturbances (including shock-like electrical sensations), somnolence, sweating, tremor, vertigo, and vomiting.

PLEASE consult with your prescribing doctor to obtain a realistic and safe discontinuation schedule.

Usually Effexor is tapered by reducing the daily dose by 75 mg at 1 week intervals.
In your case, if your tablets are scored, 37.5 mg. would be the next titration dosage. ONLY YOUR PRESCRIBING DOC CAN MAKE THE BEST RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOU, GIVEN YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES.

I sincerely hope that this info is helpful to you and others who consider just stopping any drug, not just the SSRIs, without first consulting and getting a titration plan in place.

Best of luck to you!
You could try filling your prescription at Wal Mart. They have better prices by far!
It also depends on how long you were taking them. my withdrawel was quick and wasn't to bad because I was not on it that long! I hated it.
Absolutely not! Effexor can have severe withdrawal effects and can even make you feel that you have a bad case of the flu. Additionally, it can make you feel extremely depressed and suicidal.

My doctor recently titrated me off of the Effexor because of the terrible side-effects. However, he was well educated on discontinuing the medication and carefully did so without any adverse effects. I highly suggest that you talk to your doctor about discontinuing the Effexor.

I also know that switching to Cymbalta, another new antidepressant can prevent symptoms of withdrawal.

Additionally, I do not have insurance, nor a job so my doctor was giving me free samples. You can ask your doctor about this. There are also pharmaceutical companies that have programs for people that cannot afford their medication. And I am fairly certain that walmart has this drug on their $3 list.
