Is it acceptable (and legal) for a mental health provider to give placebo in place of a anti depressant?

Question:
** This is if the doctor is not convinced that they are really depressed

Answers:
Thoughi have heard of placebos being given i the past in most recent years i have seen no such thing ..
i think there would be legal inplications if placebos were being used. and if you doubt your mental health care providers opionion why don't you just go to another one ?
Fab question, but I would think that the answer would be no. I would think that if they thought you weren't depressed that'd have to say so!
No, it is totally unethical. Placebos are only given to patients who sign up for clinical studies.
Nope. Unethical and illegal unless you give your informed consent as part of a clinical trial. Most docs won't cross that line due to the malpractice litigation that can ensue.
Only during clinical trials can they give you a placebo. usually participants are paid to be in the study or all of their medical treatments relating to the study are paid for.

If a doc were to give a placebo and tell you it is a different drug, this would have major implications on ethics. If you were in an accident and you were telling ER you were taking a certain drug and you weren't this would cause problems with how they interpret your lab results and also what Rx they would treat you with. This is just one example of how this practise would be unethical.
Giving a placebo is harmless, whereas prescribing an unnecessary medication can cause harm.

It could be argued that the placebo is treatment for someone who does not want to acknowledge that they are responsible for what they believe.
