What is the best way to get off xanax?

Question:
I take it for horrible anxiety, I want to keep taking it just cut back and take it as needed, I'm having a hard time cutting back. I'm having alot of panick. I've just been taking halves instead of wholes. will the panic subside?

Answers:
I take xanax also. Its hard, but when I get upset I write everything down. I write how I feel and it helps. I only take one tablet before I go to bed at night to help me sleep so I don't have those racing thoughts running through my head all night. It has been helping a lot. If that doesn't help try going to counseling at least once a week.
Consider paxil instead of xanax.

Reducing by 50% straight off the bat may be a bit much.

Try cutting down by no more than 25% / week until you're off it altogether.

Best of luck,

Dear Princess. Talk to your doctor. You should not treat anxiety with xanax alone. That is a "short-term" solution and there are better ways of treating anxiety and panic attacks. Also there is a xanax XR which is an extended release form of this medicaiton. Please let your doctor know about your concerns and see if he/she is willing to try the SSRI class of medications (anti-depressants) which have excellent results for anxiety. best wishes
xanax is not meant to be taken on a daily basis to prevent anxiety, it is for a panic attack every so often when you NEED it because it is very addicting. Take somethig on a daily basis to prevent the anxiety. I take paxil everyday and it works wonders..i used xanax maybe once i year when i'm doing something i'm really not comfortable with. Good luck!
