Question:

HELLO RIC,
Lithium is usually used to treat Bi-Polar disorders, but can be used in conjunction with other meds used to treat the schizophrenia. There are many medications that are used to treat schizopherenia such as: Haldol, Zyprexa, Thorazine, and Respirdal. There is also a fairly new one one the market called Clozapine which is used to treat suicidal tendencies associated with schizophrenia, but the doctors need special permission to write prescriptions for this medication...I hope this has been helpful to you and I want to wish you the best of luck and may God bless you and keep you safe and happy...luv, Sweetness #1
M;y boyfriend took Lithium for several years for Bipolar Disorder until his hands began trembling - then he went off of it. His hands still tremble. I guess that's a permanent side effect.

My neighbor has Bipolar Disorder and he takes Lithium but it doesn't help at all. He's always out of control at 8 years old.

I have schizophrenia and have never been introduced to Lithium myself. I take Abilify and now have no symptoms or side effects.
Nope.

Lithium treats bipolar mood swings and that's about it. The exception would treatment of schizo-affective disorder, which is like a combination of bipolar and schizophrenia. Here, too, it is treating the schizo-affective mood swings, not the schizophrenic symptoms.

Well, heck, there is another use for Lithium. Augmenting anti-Ds for those with refractory depression. Note, though, current theory is leaning towards refractory depression being on the bipolar spectrum.
no lithium carbonate does not treat schizophrenia it treats bipolar disorder.
You know they've tried lithium on schizophrenics and although it was not the best choice it did seem better than nothing. Alot better than nothing. But that was 20 years ago. Nowadays they have more knowledge and better new medicines they can use. There are medicines that work alot better than that, way better.
