Having tried Salvia myself I can say you have no worries... doesnt even really WORK! and its natural. I think its more of a mind over matter thing. doesnt even give ya a good buz!
i tried salvia, and really didn't feel any changes, yet, many sites online advice that there is one designated to watch while the other smokes it. i have attached a link, i hope that answers your question better.
Interesting that this came up... I do not smoke but was recently with three people who did smoke Salvia and they were fine. They giggled a little and said they "zoned out" for a minute. They seemed very relaxed and said they would do it again. This is legal and it would not be if it were even remotely fun or dangerous (or both). You sound responsible and will be in the safety of your own home, so go for it.
Here's another link to go with the Erowid one. You'll read that salvia is NOT a recreational drug. This is true.

Here is a link to a very well researched and informative site that should be helpful to you.
It's really an individual experience, however so really think this through after reading all the information provided. It's not like weed, and it's effects are very short lived ( from going in to coming down an avg. of 45 minutes), however can be incredibly intense .

If you smoke it, you'll be back to your old self in no time. The immediate effects of Salvia are about 5-15 minutes of an intense immediate trip. Then it's over. The end. You can go about your daily business, and that's the beauty of Salvia Divinorum-- a short half-life. (On the other hand, you may need some time to reflect or write about the profundity of whatever you experience.)
Now, if you chew salvia leaves that's a different story. You may have a longer-lasting impact. It can last 2 hours if you're chewing on it. Though my experiments with it proved that the impact is much less strong.
Of course, I must admit that even though it's supposed to leave your system quite quickly, I could have sworn I heard songs revealing the universe's mysteries 8-hours later... hmmm. But I was completely coherent, alert, able to function, communicate, be normal, etc. So no big deal...
Also, for some people there may be a secondary chemical reaction in the brain that causes a sense of well-being for about 24-hours after an intense dose. I don't know how to explain it, but there's nothing bad about a sense of well-being. :)
This, at least has been my experience and the sum of what I've read online thus far... Hope it helps.
I must add, however, that I agree with the person who said it's not a recreational drug. It's not fun; it's spiritual. It's not relaxing; it's introspective and quite frankly a little scary. You won't want to sit down on a Friday night and expect to have fun smoking this. You'll want to be seeking answers to the mysteries of life while meditating, praying, and prostrating yourself to whatever god you serve.
Salvia Divinorum is not fun. It is revealing, educating, reflective, expanding, and spiritual. It's like the antithesis of other drugs. :) (Heck, some research even shows it's ANTI-addictive.)
Lower level extracts have a mild effect.while the higher levels can have a very powerful effect. Start small and make sure you are comfortable with the experience. Anyone who says Salvia doesen't have any effect on you doesn;t know what they are talking about,..or doesn;t know where to get quality salvia. The Peak effect from smoking will last about 3- 10 minutes.
