Marked mood swings are the primary symptom of both conditions. The major difference between the two, is that persons with Bipolar 1 experience manic episodes, whilst persons with Bipolar 2 do not (rather, they experience hypomanic episodes). Both experience periods of major depression.
You are making a mistake by asking the difference.
If you suspect odd behavior in yourself or someone else see a doctor or take them to a doctor immediately so they don't get worse. Don't try to understand what is wrong, allow the doctor to decide what is wrong. It is very hard to force someone to get help and some people are afraid to see a doctor if they are mentally ill. There is no reason to be afraid. If the situation gets bad call an ambulance or the police department, they will help immediately.
The major difference is that Bipolar 2 patients tend to have more depressive episodes and NO manic episodes. They have hypomania, which is a less dramatic version of mania.
Bipolar 1 patients have more manic episodes, where they are usually out of control and need to be hospitalized.
Hypomania does not usually cause hospitalization. It just feels good.
Depression symtpoms are the same in both.
