What is selective amnesia?

Question:
from a psychologist point of view

Answers:
It's what wives and girlfriends get when it suits them!
Some pshchologists think that they can really do selective amnesia. You really can't. To make selective amnesia you will have to have open surgery on your brain to tick off what you dont want to remember. There are places on your brain (that doctors can do better than pshchologists) that will turn off certain things. It is a very insafe procedure and might as well get amnesia all together.

Good luck.
selective amnesia, unlike regular amnesia, causes you to forget one or two things. you can forget things like how to eat or how to read, rather than forget everything, for the most part, like with regular amnesia. so i guess with selective you remember alot and forget certain things and with amnesia you just forget.
I wasn't sure, so I checked first. Selective amnesia is not a technical term used by psychologists. It is a socially defined phrase used to mean you remember what you want to and forget what is inconvenient to you.
Trauma, of one kind or another, in its intensity may be too strong. (An auto accident, not remembering what happened)
(A rape or sexual abuse)

These are examples that can be seen in otherwise healthy people.

People with dissociative problems DID can literally "not remember" or dis associate themself from the event.
Or the memory is stored away, held by an unconsious "part", often not recalled until years later when a similar event occurs.
Selective amnesia is simply when an individual willingly neglects to "remember" any given situation, much like the selective listener willingly chooses what he/she hears.
