Hi, I was taking Stillnox (I'm an Aussie), it's the same as Ambien about a year ago when I was going through depression. My doctor explained to me that you can only take it for 3-4 nights in a row. You need to then have a break for a few nights. Apparantly if you just keep taking it night after night, it can stop working for you. I used to take it for 5 nights (weeknights) and then I wouldn't take it on the weekends. It was still a bit of a pain because most weekends I would hardly sleep. Thankfully this only went on for about 6 weeks and then I didn't need to take them anymore. I occasionally have a bad night and I will take 1/3 to a 1/2 of a 10mg tablet. As far as taking 30-45 minutes to work, my doctor told me that as soon as I want to go to bed, take it and then go straight to bed. Don't sit around watching tv etc. It will only take longer. If you just lay there and relax, try not to think of anything (easier said than done I know), you should drift off within 5-10mins. I wish you the best, I know how frustrating it is to not be able to sleep.
ambien is a drug like heroin. if you take it often, your body develops resistance against it. try taking ambien every other night instead of every night.
Your body can grow tolerant of drugs, so you should see your doctor so they can either change the dose or prescribe something else.
I had the same problem with Ambian. I also tried Lunesta and had no luck with that one either. The only thing i have found that actually works everytime and is soooo much cheaper is ADVIL PM. its 10x better than tylonol PM
If you've been taking it daily for a long time, you may have developed a tolerance to the drug. I have no other suggestion than the obvious one - see your doctor.
