Can a person legally mentally ill lose parental rights?

Question:

Answers:
It is possible, however the person would have to go through a custody hearing and it would have to be proven that the person was unfit to have parental rights. Just because someone is found to be mentally ill does not necessarily mean that the person loses his/her rights. I have worked with several people that had a severe and persistent psychiatric disorder and they were incredible parents.
only if u have been proven as bad parent other than that u can fight it and they cant legally take away ur rights only if ur adopting can they deny u a child becouse of ur disability
If it is determined that they can't provide sufficient care for the children, then yes.
If the person is competant enough to take care of the child no. But if this person shows signs that he/she is unable to care for them selves than of course.
Yes, if it is proven they are a danger to themselves and or the children. Or if they are incapable of caring properly for the children due to the illness.
It's going to depend on the situation. If they are unwilling to take their medication regularly, and are found unfit without the meds, then yes, I can see that happening. People that are responsible and take care of themselves and their children well wouldn't have a reason to lose their rights. It's all about what is best for the children involved.
I think that it depends on what the mental illness is, I have been diagnosed with depression for forty years and I raised my three children with out any interference from Social Services. But I know people who have things like schiphernaia and they don't' have custody of their children but they don't have their illness undercontrol either.
Yes, if someone reports bad parenting. If not then no.
Yes, if they are considered a danger or unable to properly care for a child.
it depends on what you mean by "legally mentally ill" only if it's something that they could find you incompetent. Most of that stuff would require you to be institutionalized though. Consult with a lawyer in your area to find out if whatever specific illness would cause a loss of rights.
What do you mean "legally"? Legally blind cant get a drivers license-ah, that makes sense huh? To be legally blind there are parameters of vision that are considered.
Legally mentally ill- I never heard of such, unless a crime was committed and the person was determined to be mentally ill at the time of the crime.
A person can be committed to an institution by a judge that they are brought before. But that doesnt make them legally mentally ill.
I just have an issue with the "legally" part, which I've never heard of, but on which parental rights might hang were there such a thing.
I have no legal background to say, nor experience, however I do believe along with the null "legal", I do believe social services always favor the parent over an outsider to raise a child.
Say the person has schizophrenia, and has episodes where they are not in control of themselves, and not aware of what is right and wrong during an acute phase, SOMEONE can petition the court for custody of the children, but it would have to be shown how the person is a detriment and danger to the children, but that wouldnt be b/c of any so-called legal issue.
Hope that helps.
OK, I have a little experience on this subject... I have a kid, and considered"mentally ill" CPS has come to my place. My kid is well fed, not abused one bit. They can't just take kids away due to a parent being mentally ill. As long as the child is not left, lets say when the parent is hospitalized and the parent is not dangerous to their children, I believe it would be difficult for social services to come in a take children away.
