Depakote is used mainly to treat mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorder as it works to stabilize one's mood. My cousin was on it for a while, it caused her to gain quite a bit of weight, sleep all the time, and she then developed a tremor. There are other medications available that have a lot less side-effects and are highly effective (perhaps even more so) than Depakote.
My husband takes it for the mania part of his bipolar disorder. It calms him down. It can also, but not always, make him drowsy. - Bunny
I take Depakote as a mood stabilizer. I've experienced no side effects.

the only side effect i can remember was a little weight gain
"Depakote must not be used with additional seizure control drugs. Early signs of liver problems include loss of seizure control, vomiting, unusual tiredness/weakness, loss of appetite, yellowing eyes/skin, or swelling of the face.Contact your doctor promptly if you develop any of these symptoms. Liver tests should be run before and during use of the Depakote."
I'm taking Depakote as a Mood Stabilizer. (I'm bipolar) It does seem to help and I've had no bad side effects.
I tried Depakote, put me to sleep and gave me a voracious appetite. Also made me irritable and I was depressed all the time. I hated it.
Now I take Lamictal (lamotrigene) and it's the perfect drug for me. Controls the seizures and doesn't affect my appetite or my moods, that I have noticed. Could be that I don't notice from another drug (mood stabilizer) that I take.
A hundred years ago, I'm sure I would have died before my age now.
