How do you effectively treat depression? Is there something you can do on your own?

Question:
Symptoms:
- feeling sad all the time
- lack of energy
- inability to focus (b/c you're thinking depressing thoughts)
- feeling angry and wanting to scream all the time
- slow reaction to your environment

Answers:
believe it or not... exercise is supposed to help... take a walk... even with lack of energy... a walk doesn't require an extreme amount of energy... get some music (make sure you have up beat songs and nothing that has a negative message) put on some comfortable clothes and walk... while you're walking think about things... like where you would like to be in the next year, in the next 5 years. If something makes you sad... CRY... you will feel better... if something makes you angry walk faster, or possibly even run... see where your feet take you and you might actually be pleasantly surprised with where you end up and what you find.
if that doesn't work... write... write all of the things in your head on a piece of paper... then when you're done burn it
if that doesn't work... read... I find when my mind can escape reality, it helps my mood.
You bet, we all get depressed, at times it may feel really bad. Real depression, not just the little every now and then down in the dumps, they say is clinical, and needs medication. I can't speak to that. Since I don't like meds very much, I'm 62 and thank God, am on none, I also am in the medical field and know for every good there is a bad to RX. so i stay away form meds.

most effective for me is action, exercise, engaged with movement. Like cleaning the house, jogging, swimming. Just try to be sad when you are totally engaged with something physical, it's practically impossible.

So next time, or now if you are depressed now. Try this, don't just think about it, thinking is counter productive. Go outside and walk at a fast pace, fast enough that your heart rate trips up and your breathing hard, go ahead, do it for 15-30 minutes. Then tell me, were you depressed? Bet not, now you say when you stop you get that way again, maybe...but maybe not. Often times it breaks the cycle. The other thing to do is choose not to allow those thoughts, just refuse them when they come up and, think of something else.
Could be attitude and the fact that noticing choice is the real and simple step it takes by availability to smack a bad attitude down pretty hard - send that thing packing. If it gets back up hit it again and immediately put something good in it's place...bad attitudes are no different than a bully who dreams your're scared of him/her.

Of course we have to deal with close relationships and people yell sometimes. If you think differently then you've been conned and so toss that to the trash. I yell, your darn right I'll yell or get stern if I know - not think - something is going very wrong most definately in my family and I don't care what anyone believes about fairyland where nothing should be done about everything. Sorry but I'm not into that bondage lifestyle thing and here's a positive note...it took who to get sick and tired of candles probably to the point of getting miffed to give us electricity? Thank heavens nobody put a guilt trip on him or we'd all be well ...forget this computer that's for sure and so another good point where one good thing lead to another.

"inability to focus (b/c you're thinking depressing thoughts)" ~~~No...you say or think NO and do something, listen to something, or replace with positive thought your choice. Remember your parents/authorities/grandparen... (you choose) who are or were not perfect but you can pick the good out of your past just as you've decided to make a habit out of dwelling on the negative without realizing the learning part. Your're going with the positive and learning from the negative now so turning that into a positive as well. They disciplined you to teach good habits later used to discipline yourself with a simple NO and for the most part you've probably got that down except this and we all have or had our whole childhood to practice as well - needs to be here in the present. It's like we were handed equipment that was stored for later use and we used it often during our childhoods but as adults it needs to be up and running at full force. The sooner we realize it's there for good the quicker it becomes habit by acceptance. Example: Have you accepted that you have to stop at a stop sign or stop and look BOTH ways before you cross the street? You probably don't even think twice about it anymore. Do the same with these thoughts - acknowledge, accept and not rid but process and store.

"lack of energy"

Your exercise routine .whether walking, stretching, yoga, light routine, ballroom dance group, join a club... whatever.

Lack of water can cause the blues or at least it can feel that way because dehydration takes away energy - drains. Anything with caffiene in it dehydrates and so I've seen also that when people drink beer their in the bathroom just as much as those that drink a pot of coffee. I drink one cup of coffee a day and have limited anything beyond that to a treat. I also enjoy fruit juice especially if I've been lazy about eating fruit.

Vitamins starting with good multi daily. Beyond that do some reading and also chat with doc to let him/her know what you are going to take or are taking and the pharmacist is usually knowledgable when it comes to vitamins also. I also enjoy salads different from what I grew up on. You wouldn't believe the different tossed salads I've served and my hubby and family enjoys them also. Which reminds me I've got a garden full of vegetables that need picking again. ~~ You Take Care & Live Blessed
