Bipolar disorder in children?

We have a 13 yr old grandson that his parents claim has been diagnosed as bipolar and ADHD. The reason we say claim is that his stepmom is quit the hypochondriac and we think is looking for something wrong with him because she doesn't treat him the same as her other bio children-in other words he is treated like a "stepchild". The concern we have is that we have had him with us for a week with no meds and absolutely no problems-except what a normal teen boy would act. Our question is: do all bipolar and/or ADHD need or have to be on meds all of the time? We know for sure that there is no counseling, thereapy, etc. going on and no meds were sent with him for this visit. His parents even have HIM convinced that he has these disorders. We are searching for help because as grandparents, we only want what is best for him.

Blessings on you for loving your grandchild!! Most children can not reliably be diagnosed with bipolar disorder and it is unsafe to give bipolar medication to children. A responsible psychiatrist will counsel and do many tests before diagnosing anyone with bipolar disorder. As for the ADD and ADHD, these disorders are over diagnosed to any child who has not been disciplined or has a lot of energy or creativity. A lot of parents or step-parents today just want to drug their kids to make it easier on them. I would suggest you get in touch with a child advocate and find out what your rights are and what his rights are and how to help him. Try child welfare, CASA, child psychiatrist. I hope you can help him.

I don't see how a "step" parent has to do with your grandson. There's no biological connection. If you feel your child is in an enviroment that is not healthy for him, you have the legal right to step in. Biopolar disorder is nothing to mess around with

i used to live with someone bipolar. he was in his twenties and would have these wide mood swings. very chirpy and happy at work, but would go into his own dark world in his own room, which he painted black. he watched tv all weekend with the blinds closed. i dont know what went on in his mind, but i do think bipolar meds is just an easy way to treat a hurt child, someone that doesn't have his emotions and feelings in check. i think something like therapy or someone that has a good outlook on like who really knows how to related and talk to the child would be the best thing for him. i don't want to promote seeking a therapist tho, because that could have ramifications on him as well, because that will convince him he is really psycho.
