If someone is depressed and they drink alcohol?

Question:
What happens since alcohol is also a depressant? I find it kind of odd that people will smoke to 'calm their nerves' although nicotine is considered a stimulant, and most that take alcohol, a depressant, become giddy?

Answers:
well when someone drinks if they are depressed they might feel better temporarily but after they are dont being drunk they will feel even more depressed so they will drink again (this is how alcoholism occurs) and eventually the chemicals in your brain get very off balance and one will become very depressed and could possibly develop mental problems
Alcohol is a depressant. Most people don't realize that part of your brain is devoted to inhibiting action. If you depress the action of those parts of the brain, they no longer function that way, and the person who is drinking seems to be uninhibited and giddy. There is a lot of research that suggests a strong relationship between depression and alcohol use. Drinking when you're depressed helps numb the pain to a degree but in the long run it makes depression worse.
I do tons of both. Never thought of it before, that is weird.
Alcohol is not a depressant. this is a myth .

MYTH: Alcohol is predominantly a sedative or depressant drug.

REALITY: Alcohol's pharmacological effects change with the amount drunk. In small quantities, alcohol is a stimulant. In large quantities, alcohol acts as a sedative. In all amounts, however, alcohol provides a rich and potent source of calories and energy.
I know a lot of people with severe mental illness, and the meds we take are not enough. Many of us binge drink (OK, for us teatotallers, that's 3 beers) when times are at their worst. The other choice it to blow our brains out. The booze really can help! Soooooooo I want to say that alcohol is a drug like any other drug. It gets a bad rap because a LOT of people get addicted to it. Honestly, even the psychiatrist doesn't get worked up about it, given that none of us do it that often, and none of us have drinks regularly, even socially. There are a lot of people I know with severe mental illnesses who DON'T do this, too. I dunno how they cope when things are at their very worst.
people smoke to calm down. i know someone who avoided seizures by smoking. alcohol makes you more depressed sometimes and more active other times. it depends on the person.
Anyone who drinks because they are depressed is a bunch of bull crap, they drink because they want too, and that is just a way out.
