Why are some people disturbed by Horror movies, while others enjoy them? What does it say about the psyche?

Question:
I'm referring to horror movies which could actually happen, and involve extreme violence and gore, or people wtih deep mental issues, such as Hostel, Chainsaw Massacre, Hills that have eyes, and things of that nature.

If watching peaceful and inspiring movies can calm someone over time, or cause positive feelings, what happens to people who regularly watches these movies? There is always an effect to everything we do.

Does it eventually numb horror lovers in certain ways, or perhaps change their psyche? If so how? What causes one person to become emotionally irritated or disturbed by these movies, while others laugh through them, or seem to have no effect? I'm not sure if this question should go in the mental health or movie section, so I may place it in both? Thanks

Answers:
I think everyone is disturbed by them on some level... that is why some people enjoy them... its a perversion on their part
I can watch any movie except movies like the Exorcism of Emily Rose. That sh*t scares me and leaves you thinking that it could happen to you.
I can't watch any of that stuff or read it. I have such a vivid imagination that I keep seeing it in my head. This is a good question and I wonder the same thing if it desensitizes people to killings of humans. Yuck
I have been watching Horror movies ever since I was little and I love them. Some are a little much and I have to close my eye's, but I think for most people it's like a roller coaster ride, they like to get scared.
Yes, some people become numb to violence.
Many killers start out by watching horror films.
When you stop winching at the pain and begin to enjoy it, it's time to STOP watching.
I totally enjoy horror and gore movies! I have either owned or seen the movies you listed a dozen times or better. Hostel is awesome! yeah, I think watching these types of movies do make you numb to a point. Because I find myself screaming whats happened to the GOOD horror movies...I want them to TOP the last one, ya know...I want MORE. I like them to be bloody, loud and shocking. I think I like the shocking best, but I am in heaven if the movie has all three! There are times I laugh in a horror movie, simply because they do not make it realistic. yeah like when the girl sees her boyfriend chopped to little pieces, she STANDS there watching and screaming.um I don't think so...I would have pulled out my own blade and went to slicing on him...I sure as blankie ain't gonna stand there like a nut screaming waiting for my turn! I also enjoy watching the collections of Faces Of Death and those are REAL recorded happenings.

no I am completely normal. married have 3 sons, heres the biggest shocker, I am baptist very religious. I don't understand what makes someone like certain types of movies. I have loved horror and gore since I was little and NO I am not a secret slasher. I feel bad at times for enjoying the types of movies I like. However I do not care how gory, loud or shocking Exorcism movies I can NOT watch. I am weak for those movies...yes I get freaked out, why I have no clue...like you said all these others CAN happen...guess we will always wonder what and why makes us like one thing and be afraid of another.
Good topic though!
It's watching people escape from dangerous situations that is satisfying. If there's no hope of escape for a torture victim, for example, the torture becomes unbearable to watch. It's a bit like going on a roller coaster - your body says it's scary but your mind knows it's really a lot safer than it looks, and you feel relieved afterwards. In a situation like this the adrenaline pumps out, and this makes you fearful, but it also makes you very alert - once the fear is gone you're left feeling very alive, at least for a few minutes.
In addition people can learn from horror movies how to escape from dangerous situations. This is a little harder with supernatural horror, as Hollywood has a limited imagination, but the movies about psychotic killers do provide soultions (generally the psycho is killed or arrested).
People who were abused may find horror movies either fascinating or terrifying. Healthy and/or bored people may enjoy the shock and stimulation value.

I once went through a phase of reading horror short-stories. After two months of them, my brain started seeing a dark cloud over the world. It was creepy! I stopped those stories & was fine, again. It's like "you are what you eat", in the brain, too!
i have always watched horror movies,it may sound strange, but it helps me deal with real life.my real life has been pretty scary ,i learn from others scary situations and lets me know my life was not as bad as theirs.make any sense.?
Because after the horror show is over, we feel good that our world is back to normal, making us feel secure once more, and happy.
When I was a child I was terrified out of my wits by such stuff - and it was much milder then. Now, I usually laugh at it - it is only celluloid, after all.
The Burning Bed was scary to me.
I'm a huge horror movie fan. I LOVE the Saw series and Hostel, but I only like it for the gore. I'm a huge gore whore.
Hey, I am offended.
You didn't mention 3 of the BEST.

Saw
SAW2
SAW3
Nothing like blood and guts to ease the tension after a long week of work.
Its not so much that its a horror movie such as its some thing we are missing in our own lives. EXCITEMENT. Yes a lot of people watch the so called chick flicks where we see romance or things that have actually experienced so its not such a big deal. However Ive never had a vampire chase me through a scary castle or an alien try to take over my body etc. so we are all missing the things we know will almost NEVER happen to us
