Why do the doctors and nurses in treatment centers, Restrain patients? what do they do it with?
Question:
What happens if you wont participate in group therapy? will they notify your parents?
Answers:
The use of physical restriants is rarely used anymore and illegal in some states. You have to have a doctors written constant to use restraints. And it better be absolutly necessary or the facility can be shut down by the state. If you refuse your meds depending on the situation your in say your in a mental hospital or somewhere similar to that they cannot restrain you but they can refuse to let you leave if you don't follow you rtreatment plan, and with eating they can if it comes down to it go to court and get a court ordered feeding tube put in and if you try to remove it they can restrain you so you don't hurt yourself. Also if you won't participate in group therapy again depends on where you are if it's a treatment facility or mental hospital again they can refuse to let you leave because your following your treatment plan. And yes if you are a minor they can and do notify your parents in the hopes that your parents can talk to you and get you to work with the program and help yourself by getting the treatment you need. Take it from someone who was in this situation 18 years ago, it will go alot better for you if you just take your meds and work with them otherwise you'll spend alot longer time locked up than you need to.
A patient can only be restrained if they are combative and or a danger to themselves or others in these combative moments.
Most of the time, if someone has the possiblity (at that moment) to harm themself or others, that's when they restain a person. I don't think they would restrain you to get you to eat. But if you don't eat, a feeding tube could be placed to continue nourashment. If you don't participate in group therapy IMO, why stay in it?. I don't think they are allowed to notify parents because of the privacy act.
Yes they can restrain you either staff helping to hold you (short term) or use belt-like straps to tie you down. If you refuse to eat they can just hook you up to an iv. They can't force you to participate in group therapy. You either participate or not but they hope that with enough time you will be willing to participate.
They will only use force if needed, for your safety or the safety of others.
they can 'force' you to do very little. there are heavy restrictions on when it is legal and safe to restrict a patient. if the patient is posing a physical threat to another patient or staff, it is sometimes (under a doctor's order) appropriate to restrain a patient. this can be done with soft cuffs that hold arms and legs to a bed, with a vest-like device that will hold them in a chair, or with physical force. they won't just tie you down because you wouldn't take your ativan this morning. if you don't eat, you will be the one suffering because you will be STARVING. if you are mentally unable to deal with this, your POA may look into getting a PEG-tube that is inserted through your stomach and food gets pumped in with a machine to keep you alive. they will not tie you down because you are trying to prove a point by declining to eat your sloppy joe. if you won't participate in group therapy, chances are, they will notify your doctor and your family or POA and it will be documented that you are noncompliant with the therapy so that your future docs and therapists know this. if you are under 18, yes. they will notify your legal parent or guardian. also, people can be 'chemically restrained' with drugs. any restraints applied to a patient have to be heavily documented as to why they were applied. times have changed.
Legally you can only be restrained if you are a threat to others' safety or your own. You can be strained with wrist and ankle restraints which should be padded, a waist restraint or if you are in a hospital bed they can put all four bed rails up.
You should not be restrained if you refuse to eat or participate in group therapy, but you should ask your self why you won't do these things. What possible bad could come from eating or sharing your feelings and thoughts with others.
I have been in the hospital, where they had to restrain me because I was out of control and was a harm to myself and others! In the one I was in they used cloth straps. But as soon as you calm down they give you a chance to get out of the straps by talking to you and asking you if you are going to hurt youself or anyone else. If not they release you. With me they gave me a tranqulizer to calm me down. I fought them but there were to many of them. In the place I was in if you refused to take your meds you were not allowed to do as many things, like no going out for smoke break until took your meds, if your a smoker You will take your meds the next time. They did not force me to eat, they encoureaged me to eat, if you go without for several days they will use an I.V. I did not participate in group therapy and they did nothing other than encoureage me. I'm not sure about the parent thing. But the more you participate and want to get well the sooner you will get out. They are only there to help you. Hugs!
