If theres a family member with mental illness, does that mean it runs in the family?
Question:
Answers:
Suicide? No. A mental illness such as depression could have brought on suicide in the individual however. It has been proven that some mental illnesses do in fact have genetic links. I wouldn't worry about it. Suicide is a major decision made by an individual who's probably undergoing feelings of hopelessness and depression. The way people cope with the negative feelings that they may be having is very important in determining whether they'll make it through the rough spot for better or worse in the long run. The key is to have strong faith in your yourself and to express those feelings of melancholy and distress to family and close friends. Hope this answered your question!
It entirely depends on which mental illness you are refering too...
For example, Downs Syndrome is not passed on from family member to family member but is however a mutation in one of the person's gene pairs that causes the mental illness...
Suicide is not a mental illness. There are mental illiness that can cause a person to commit suicide. Bi-Polar Deppression is one of the main ones that can cause a person to be suicidal and Bi-Polar is passed down from one family member to the next. You can go online and search for deppression and check out the sites to see what kind of answers you can get from there.
Not necessarilly, depends on the illness, but most mental things are from abuse, mostly as a youngster, of course drugs do a lot of damage too. If you are speaking of the Alzheimer's thing, then no one knows yet. Ron
Suicide is like a symptom of mental illness. Yes, it can be hereditary. It does not mean it will effect everyone in the family. Though many family members may have other diagnoses. It's hard to tell. Unless the person or people talk about it or are known for attempts.
Suicide is NOT a mental illness. It can be a RESULT of a mental illness or disorder. And yes, chances are, if the gene characteristic is strong enough it can pass on to future generations. On the positive side, however, there are tons of prescriptions like adderrall and other anti-depressants which weren't really available to your ancestors. Even natural vitamins and supplements such as Omega 3 fish oil, St. John's Wort, Ginko Biloba and many others can provide the brain the stuff it is lacking and dramaticall improve your mood. Also check out a book called "The PDR"- A Pocket Book to Prescription Drugs. It has a listing in the back of all the different types of conditions, and the drugs you can take for it with a complete breakdown of each drug and the side effects and everything.
no...suicide is due to the state of the person is emotionally. it is not genetic.depression may lead to it but that is determined by the amounts of seretonin.
it is not genetic! no scientist has been able to prove it!
Suicide is not always a mental illness? People that commit suicide may be living in frustration or there may be some kind of conflict going on in their lives.
I would not say that suicide is a mental illness. People that are mentally ill can very easily commit suicide, but it is not the cause of all suicides.
I would have to ask what was going on in the relatives’ fathers’ life before coming to any conclusion. There could be any number of things that were going wrong that could have caused the suicide.
I used to work for someone that was married to a very beautiful woman and she divorced him because of his line of work. He tried to get her to come back, but she wouldn’t. He couldn’t handle it so he committed suicide. It was a shame too. He was in his 20’s.
You could do a search on the Internet for ‘Causes of Suicide’ or any number of other searches. You will probably find many.
I’m sure you will eventually get many opinions, but remember this, ‘Opinions are like noses, everybody has one.
Hope this helps.
suicide is an action, not a mental illness.
this depends on the illness also it depends on who in the family has it for example if your uncle is bipolar it may run to his kids and it might be hidden in his siblings but there is a lot of debate over mental illness and genetic dispotion the argument revolves around whether a mental illness is truly genetic meaning your father was "crazy" so your very likely to go or already are "crazy" and any children you have may also carry the "crazy" gene of course if there was undeniable proof of this then it would be likely that genetic screening and breeding laws might come into force in some countries but thats off topic anyway there are too other sides to this arguement first that mental illness is not genetic at all but entirely caused by your environment and how your raised unforunately this is unlikely because people follow generally predictable lives and therefore could be taught avoid becoming ill in the first place the other side is that its a little bit of both say your family happens to have a gene that allows mental illness to occur more often or esasily than most peoplebut only some of you have it your father has it, you have it but, your cousin doesnt have it and his brother has it too, now say your father became ill and your being around him or around the people that influenced him causes you to become ill too but your cousin and his/her brother dont live or arent influenced by the same people or environment that you and your father were so your cousin who doesnt have the gene obviously doesnt become ill and his brother who had the gene also didnt become ill because of the different circumstances so to answer your question. it just cant be proved one way or another

Mental illnesses can run in families, but it depends on the illness. I know ,for example, clinical depression runs in my family, and seems to be passed down and mainly affect the women in my family.
Suicide itself, isn't a mental illness, there could be many different factors in this relative's suicide. Depression, bi-polar, etc... you should try to find out more details if you can and go from there. If nothing was ever diagnosed in that person, then just be aware of it, but don't dwell on it.
Good luck.
Suicide is not a mental illness but it's almost always associated with a psychiatric disorder. The most common diagnoses in cases of suicide are major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and substance dependence. Many of these illnesses, particularly bipolar disorder, do have a hereditary component. These illnesses are very treatable. Most of the people with mental disorders who commit suicide are those whose illnesses are untreated or inadequately treated. If someone has a family history of psychiatric illness or suicide the best thing to do is learn about the disorder and recognize its early symptoms so it can be treated before it results in tragedy.

Suicide is not a mental illness. There so many reasons a persons might have done that, they don't have to have a mental illness to kill themselves. But if there was an illness involved it would depend on what the illness was and what caused it. There are a few different factors that play a role in whether or not the illness can be inherited. Not all mental illnesses are genetic.
