Does depression medications work?

Question:

Answers:
Yes, you might need to try a few before you find just the right one. Most of them have pretty similar therapeutic effect, but they vary according to the individual.

Side effects vary as well, so it is important to stick with until you find the one with minimal side effects and good therapeutic effect.

Work with your prescriber, communicate your side effects, and be patient.

Most people who have a biochemical depression need ongoing medication. Research shows that after two or more episodes, you are very likely to have another sooner or later, if you stop taking medications.

If the depression is due to a specific event, sometimes a course of therapy from 9 months to a year after all of the symptoms are gone, can be sufficient.

Educate yourself on the types of depression, and don't set yourself up by trying to conquer a biochemical problem with willpower.

You wouldn't try to will the plaque out of arteries, or the tumor out of your lung, so by all means, if nonpharmacological approaches don't work, and your depression continues or gets worse, get professional help and be open to medications.

exercise works better
I've heard yes and no from some of my friends. The hardest thing though is after you stop taking the medicine, you withdrawl and become more depressed than you were before taking it. If you do decide to take it, only allow yourself to take it for a few months.
But if you are really having problems see a doctor about it.
I HAVE TAKEN IT AND IT WORKED FOR ME BUT I HAD TO GO THROUGH ABOUT 3 DIFFERENT TYPES ONE OF THEM THAT I TOOK HAD A REVERSE AFFECT ON ME WHICH MADE MY DEPRESSION 10 TIMES WORST BUT I FINALLY FOUND ONE THAT WORKED FOR ME AND I LOVE IT!
YES! But you might need to try a few before you get it right. Good luck
Yeah, it works for certain people. Some people don't like the side-affects of the mdeications, however, which makes them think it's not working. you may become dependant on the medicine and have to work your way off of it.
yes, but a combination of antidepressants and talk therapy usually works best for most people.
Not all antidepressants work for all people. I had great results from Wellbutrin, and no side effects other than dry mouth (drinking extra water a day took care of that problem)
There are a plethora of medications on the market today which is used for depression. Unfortunately, what works for me may not work for you. Seeing a trained, licensed professional will help determine which best suites your needs. It will usually that 3-6 weeks to determine where or not the medication is helping.

So, yes, depression is a disease which needs to be treated. Get into counseling. Hopefully, you will find a therapist that works well for you. You can then discuss the possibility of medications.

I wish you the very best. Depression is something to take seriously with many avenues for treatment.

Take care,

Larry
Yes, based on what your taking them for. If you have been misdiagnosed, talk to your doctor before going off the medicine or you may end up in the hospital. I've been battling depression for years and have tried many medications. Some worked and some didn't. I suppose it depends on how depressed you are.
If they are necessary for you they will work.
In the meantime

For some people, they work great. For other people, they make depression worse. It also varies greatly from each brand of anti-depressants.

If you are considering taking anti-depressants, but are not suicidal, I would suggest trying to change your lifestyle first. Lots of exercise, changing your eating habits, stuff like that can more permanently help with depression issues and it is better for you than taking synthetic drugs.

Of course, sometimes depression cannot be alleviated by those methods and synthetic drugs are absolutely necessary in order to take care of it.

Know, too, that sometimes taking the anti-depressants for just a little while will fix whatever it is that is wrong with your hormones and you can come off of them permanently. That happened to me. I had to be on anti-depressants for a few months. After that few months, I got off of the anti-depressants and haven't been on them in a year. Anti-depressants are not always a lifelong commitment.
Im sure you want to know like me what it does for people and dont just say help lighten the mood? Will you think clearer, have energy , and function normally like before
Yes, but they can have serious side effects and once they stop working (which they tend to do) you can become suicidal.

Try counseling to get to the root of your problem instead.
Medicine works but with all things it can be trial and error until you find the right one or combinations that work for your individual situation. Some times meds and therapy work hand in hand and sometimes also the meds. might need to be changed from time to time but don't give up. Its worth it!
It varies between persons. I had to try a couple before I found one that worked. I don't like taking them so I stopped but don't let me discourage you if your doctor told you to take them. I just don't like how controlled I feel on mine.
Actually they do work by affecting the amount of hormones in the brain e:g Serotonin etc. But remember when you stop taking those medications the hormones will probably go back to their original state making you feel worse. I say you relax, sit down for 30 mins and think over what depresses you. If they can be fixed try to, but if they cannot ask someone you know for a solution.
