How to correct my negative thinking habit?

Question:
I tend to look at negative sides of everything. This is a serious problem for me. Because of this I have suffered from depression. Even if I know that my thinking is wrong or exaggerated, I can not stop myself from repeating this sort of thinks. Can you suggest anything to help me? I am still on medication for depression. I know medicines alone will not solve my problem. I can not avail of counseling services. You may also inform me about good websites if you know related to this.

Answers:
next time u think of anything negatively, try to look at the other side...i know it is very difficult, but it is the only way out.

do this activity for a month or so & u will automatically *** into the habit of being an optimist.
good luck, been there done that.
There is a great book I recommend.
It is called "You Can Heal Your' Life" it is wonderful.
Habits are just that: Habits. You just have to tell yourself to stop. Whenever a negative thought comes to me, I have a phrase I always use and immediately repeat it to myself.
You must surround yourself by positive thinking,( positive books, tapes, motivational lectures.
u r better not being blind/mute/lame consider ur self lucky and start afresh ,stay in a village, with nature, plant trees,be a farmer u will not have d pression ,u will sleep well &eat well after hard days work

Get a good book on how to change your thinking patterns. If you are on medications it will be easier to change this. The psychologist, Martin Seligman, has written on learned helplessness and how this affects people's lives. He is now writing on "positive psychology" and it might be worth getting one of his books. Otherwise, you might want to really consider going to a counselor. Unless you live in a very remote place, it should not be too difficult to get one, even for free. But don't trust a "quick fix" option. You'll have to be committed to change.
There is nothing to be worried at all, when you are able to identify this, this good sign and I am sure from my experience, that can be easily cured...

Let me show the way, it can not be identified directly but its nothing but lack of focus. You must be feeling that you are really doing hard but its not appearing...

Do one thing at a time and do not think about anything else...Try to complete the same till full completion...Automatically your confidence will come back you will start to think POSITIVE, really simple.

That one thing can be anything what you can do..

Its simple to correct .. first of all u must build up ur confidence .. keep a goal ... i mean long term goal ... divide ur long term goal into short term goals ... and keep all the negative thoughts aside .. and fight for goal

When you are anxious or worried about something you tend to think negatively It can be automatic and you may to realize your doing it. Because you are anxious you tend not to question if the thoughts are right. Try to notice any "thinking errors" you might be making.
These might include: only thinking negatively, and not paying attention to more positive or balanced thoughts.
Thinking in "all or nothing" ways, and missing the "middle ground"
Underestimating you ability to cope
Challenge there thoughts by -
Putting your "automatic thought" on trial - what the evidence for and against it?
try to think of alternative explanations, even if they don't seem very convincing at first.
That's a few tips i got from my therapist
not sure if that will help.
Get the book:
Feeling Good: New Mood Therapy, by David Burns MD

Do the exercises/tests in the books, follow the examples of how to talk back to those negative thoughts.
You know what I did. I just started trying to keep track of what I was thinking. When I would find myself thinking a negative thought I would make a conscious effort to think of something positive.

It is really tough at first and you do see how many negative thoughts occupy your brain but after a while you will start to think of negative things without much effort. Good Luck.
spend some time alone, mayb a few minutes everyday.utilise tis time 2 talk 2 ur innerself. understand tat u alone is responible 4 ur life, for ur happiness.b aware of the immense possibilties tat is open 2 u, u can actually live a happier life only if u cld get over wit ur pessimism understand tis, then u wld hav a true desire 4 change, & tis gives u the power 2 act or rather think. now feed ur mind with autosuggestions, tell urself tat u r chenging 4 good. nw aftr som days of tis, i suppose u wld b ready 4 the real thing .
imagine tat ur negative thinking is a part of u, tat u can really c, giv it a form.u cld c it as a dirty shirt tat u r wearing , nw imagine tat u take off the shirtn off ur body , once & for all 4 good, u cld burn it away. tat wld help u better. b rest assured tat u hav dealt with tis bad trait of urs in the best possible way. reinforce these thoughts by imagining , somone close 2 u, ur friend or family member congragulating u 4 getting rid of ur negative thoughts, saying tat u hav bcom soo full of hope & enegry nw. well.its as simple as tat, but u need 2 hav belief in tis. u r wat u think u r, & u can do wat u think u can do. bst wishes!!!
First try to mix with your Friends and share yourself with them.Remove "NO" ,I Cant from your dictionary
Meditate on God. Pray Him. Give up non-veg food items. Imagine repeatedly and tirelessly that you can control your negative thinking.
Half-full glass of water seems half-empty glass of water 2 u.
Try thinking out small things in such +ve ways 1st, then go on 2 bigger ones... and u'll be a superb optimist.

If it still doesn't work, try to stop thinking at all.

hi santhosh

Negative thinking is not a bad habit in all matters. To think all things positive, that is, Dont believe all the matters that u faced in life , u will fall in to sea. Its not a negative character it is well matured character. So think whats the matters take positive and what the matter take negative. it will give the life to positive thinkings. Leave the small matters are very good 4 good life dont think one matter more than 1 hour. Thant is the main thing to convert negative thinkings.
ok dear

When you have come to know that you are in habit of negative thinking, that it self is enough to correct your self. Best of luck.
Medicines will not solve this problem at all. In fact they are probably making it worse.

Hello Kumar!
Thinking about the negative sides is nothing wrong at all.
But thinking always negative is not good.
A negative attitude can intensify the stresses in your life – particularly significant given that some research suggests that up 80% of disease is caused by stress.

When I get tensed about anything I keep only one thing in my mind & that is:-
Life is full of changes. Take this changes as Challenges, some give success and some act as stepping stone.

The habit which is useful to overcome negative thinking:-
Focus on the positive. Instead of thinking of all your unfulfilled dreams, give yourself credit for the many accomplishments you have achieved to date. Make a short list of positive things to refer to when your spirits are lagging: your five favorite memories, three exciting events in your future, the things you are thankful for.
The simple way to come out of this is to keep yourself in a happy surrounding. Help your mother in house work this gives a good feeling. Do yoga, feel fresh and enjoy your life by gathering the happiness you get from small things also.

Positive Thoughts+Fresh mind = Better Health
GOOD LUCK!!!
Check these websites and decide yourself, do not let others choose your future!
Read religious texts like Bhagavad Gita As It Is or Holy Bible or Koran. Otherwise read

Whatever you do make sure you Pray God and do.
Do remember ONLY GOD CAN PROTECT YOU ALWAYS!!
medicines can never cure negative thinking.
Start being on the positive side of your life.interact with people. ask them what they think about u.ask them to speak absolute truth.might be their thoughts would help u in the best way to recover.

even if it is person or a thing, they do have positive and negative angles.think as possible as positive about it. i am sure it would bring a difference
Please understand that there is a positive side of everything.
Life and situations are like 2 sides of same coin. One shows negativity and the other shows the positivity.
You need to find the positive thing in every negative thought.
All the best dear.
Have you ever come across the Human Givens Institute? It's a British psychology strand which specifically addresses negative thinking and uses ;methodology to combat this and thus relieve depression. I have suffered from depression most of my adult life, and it has been one of the most useful concepts to me. Check out their books on 'beating depression fast'. They believe that you don't need lengthy therapy, that short courses work better and don't keep on going over old ground, but help recreate more positive neural pathways. I've had therapy too, and that really helped, as well as medication. Right now, for the first timein over 9 years I am not on medication and out of therapy, and I feel fine. I still have my down moments of course, but I really try to remind myself that its like weather. (Well, british weather anyhow) Just because it's raining right now doesn't mean it's going to rain forever - the sun will shine again. (and then it'll rain again.) etc.. Good luck.
I would think in time you and your therpist can work on this problem. The meds will help you deal untill then.

Warning, about Dazza's post. This is a link to a crazy group that will tell you all meds and all doctors kill. What they really are is a front group for the cult of scientology. Talk to your doctor or therpist before you contact these people.

see if your church supports any mission trips or goes to "salkehatchie". definately go to something like that, i went to salkehatchie (a summer service program) with my church and LOVED it. it changed my whole outlook on things and how i percieve people.

for more information on salkehatchie, go to youtube and type in "the salkehatchie story" (it was actually filmed WHILE i was there)
You can try layering meds until you have relief. For example, if you are taking a common anti-depressant like Paxil or Zoloft, you can also take Seroquel for acute symptoms for a short time until you're able to control your unwanted thoughts.

You can try to do some self-therapy if you can't get to a real therapist. Try taking on a negative thought that keeps pestering you. Extend it on and think, "And so what will happen if that happens?" And then extend that possibility. And keep going until you realize this thing won't go this far and the solution is probably far less extreme and not so scary.
I'm sure you've heard by now that you have the ability to control your thoughts and your attitude. Of course it's always easier said than done.

The best thing to do is start in little steps. Train your mind to look at things from a positive perspective. Each day make the decision to find something positive in your life. Be grateful the good things that you have and are working for you. Make a habit of putting things in perspective.
