What causes memory loss or blocked memories?

Question:
I know that I had a very traumatic childhood. I do remember little bits and pieces of my childhood, but not very much. My doctor that i was seeing a few years ago told me it could be borderline disassociation disorder. But what I have read about that, people with that disorder have multiple personalities and I dont. Also, i have such a bad memory. My kids will be talking about things that I really dont remember happening. It seems like i completely forget things that happened or can only vaguely remember them. Does anyone else have this problem or know what could cause this to happen?

Answers:
Yes, when people have very traumatic childhoods, the mind "pushes away" the hurt parts into compartments at the back. Then, those parts come out occasionally and take over. When that happens, you may not be aware it's happening, but it leads to your not recalling those things with your children, and your memory losses.

It is NOT Borderline Personality Disorder, it is NOT crazy, and you do NOT need medicine for it. All you need is talk therapy with a therapist EXPERIENCED IN DISSOCIATION and you can get over it.

Don't let the things people tell you, scare you. Dissociation is a normal response to bad things happening to you, as a child.
Stress will block a memory . Trauma will block all memory . We call it amnesia. Not to worry your mind protects itself with blocks and depression. If you have to erase a belief that is false, the brain will erase it and give you chemical depression so you will remember to avoid it. This is the same for all people. To manage stress and avoid false expectations is up to your group to teach you. The restricted circle of friends do a lot to self protect.
Borderline personality disorder is NOT multiple personalities. The new term disassociative identity disorder is used to classify "alters" (or multiple personalities). Sounds to me that you may be suffering from Post traumatic stress disorder which can present with memory loss and/or blocked memories. Its known as the brains coping mechanism. Please see a licensed psychiatrist for a thorough and accurate assessment of your current symptoms.

Good luck and take care of you!

memory loss stems from a tragic event that happens in your past that was not pleasent, a loss of a family member, abuse that has happened to you, and a fall or if you pass out or get seizures a lot. blocked memories results mostly from abuse you may have suffered in the past. if you are really concerned and you get the flashbacks you should see a counceler for some PTSD ( post tramatic stress disorder ) the counceler wont make you remember things but will help you deal with the pain from your childhood in the present not the past
