Do anti-depressents really work?

Question:
I was on prozac for awhile, but I didn't really notice a significant change in the way I felt. Is this normal? Does it mean I really wasn't as depressed as I thought I was?

Answers:
Not all anti-depressants work for everyone. If you are still depressed on Prozac, ask about trying a different med (Wellbutrin, Lexapro, Cymbalta, Zoloft) or increasing your dosage. Also, anti-depressants usually take 4-6 weeks to work.
Yes, antidepressants do work. The problem is not all of them work for all people, because everyone's brain chemistry is so different. That's why there are so many different kinds of antidepressants with different chemical makeups.

Make sure you tell your psychiatrist that the Prozac isn't really working for you, tell him exactly how you are feeling, and ask what other meds you can try.

I've been on Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Serzone, and finally Celexa seems to be working for me.

But keep in mind that most psych drugs take several weeks to reach peak effectiveness.. make sure you're giving it enough time to work.
Good Luck!
it has to be the right one
some work and make you feel better
some make you feel worse and some dont do anything for you
you just have to keepp trying to you find the right one
even if they work, the drugs don't change life, it only changes how your perceive it.
I prefer to change my life and my surroundings and my circumstances to cure depression.
Prozac is a bandaid or a crutch.
I think that the trouble with our society is that we like to cure everything with pills, including normal ups and downs in response to life's cycles of sadness and joys.

Time will heal you, if you allow time to mend a broken heart or a sad spirit. Otherwise, you wear your grief on your face and on your demeanor and you can be labeled as "officially depressed"

So? Your health care provider may put you on Prozac, if they bought the Prozac advertising.

It could be compared to being given a hot powdery drink for colds when you are having a cold. The very act of trying to heal can be profoundly comforting. But did it actually help? or your body simply mended. Some people say a trip to a psychiatrist, psychologist, a fortune teller, psychic, priest or pastor etc does exactly the same thing. You need to talk it out.
