Meds to talk about with my Doctor?

Question:
I'm a teen on Celexa and Lamictal, and they are not working as well as they could. Does anyone know any good anti-depressants and sleep aids I could talk to my psychiatrist about? I'm unfamilliar with any other types of meds used for depression.

Answers:
as you said you are a teenager so your doctor is the best one to tell you want meds might help. you see a could give you a whole list of them but because you are young you may well not be aloud to take them. I recommend you tell your doctor the meds are not helping and he will change them.
There are a variety of types of antidepressants, the most commonly prescribed of which are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Celexa is one of them. Lamictal looks like it's being used as an adjunct to Celexa in your case. Lamictal is an anticonvulsant that is used to treat epilepsy but also sometimes to augment the effects of SSRIs.

Other adjunctive treatments that may go along with Celexa are perhaps SDRIs (selective dopamine reuptake inhibitors), which include most notably Wellbutrin, or a SNRI (norepinephrine) such as Effexor. Your doctor will know best which of these can or should be used together.

There are also different classes altogether that are occasionally used nowadays, including MAO Inhibitors and Tri-cyclic antidepressants, although their side-effects are typically more unpleasant.

Your doctor will *probably know best which new medications you should consider trying. You have to take most antidepressants consistently for up to 6 weeks before expecting to see any results. Switches and changes in dosages have to occur gradually and should be considered carefully.
