I have been diagnosed with anxiety disorder and related depression. Does this mean that I am mentally ill?

Question:
My doctor diagnosed me with general anxiety and social anxiety disorder and depression a few months ago. He prescribed me antianxiety and antidepressive meds which I still take. I don't seem to be getting better. Am I mentally ill because of this?

Answers:
23.26% of ALL people between ages 21 to 44 in the developed countries, do suffer in a period of time of months to years (some few weeks if treated), of generalized anxiety disorder. It is NOT mental illness...as it happens with depression, is multifactorial (due to multiple factors) and in itself is NOT a connotation of mental illness...It is extremely treatable...
(If that were true, half of humanity would be mentally ill)
no... i used to be the same way.. but im not anymore. honestly you will get better. chin up =]
Yes, I think it is considered mental illness, but it's nothing to be ashamed of.

The brain is an organ like any other in the body, and it can suffer from ailments just as easily.

Get the treatment you need and be well!
Yes, you are probably suffering from the symptoms of a mental illness, but this does not mean that it is incurable. 20% of people will suffer from a mental illness at some time in their life so don't worry about it.
Yes! Well.., mental disorder.

But don't worry! I know lots of people with all kinds of mental problems. They're perfectly good people, with all the opportunity of everyone else.

If the medication helps, then good!... stick with it.

It's not as abnormal as some think.
oh i have social anxiety terribly bad. sometimes i cant walk in stores. your not mentally ill...you need to take it 1 day at a time...make small goals and go from there. you can really help yourself, all by yourself! :)
The word diagnosed is no better than saying.. "you have this you have that" in other words you're sick. I know trustt me having anxiety disorder and depression all in one is no easy matter. However, do you really feel this way? Why are you letting someone else labeling on how you are feeling? Your question is kind of vague, but I have to contradict on the fact that you're saying "mentally ill because of this" what does that supposed to mean? If someone says you have a cold so therefore you must have a cold.
Basically yes. How ever its not much different than ...say..being diabetic. Your body doesnt produce insulin so you have to take pills or shots. Same way with your condition. Your body doesnt regulate seratonin, GABA, and a few other chemical ( one or more) in your body, so you need to take medication to regulate it. I started getting over weight and started having the same type of problem you are having. What I did is, i started running, lifting weights. after about 6 months and about 30 pounds lighter i dont take any medication and I feel great. Consult your doctor before changing or quitting any medication!
Absolutely not. You are not mentally ill. You just have some things you need to work through that are causing you anxiety. I think the majority of people go through this at some time in their lives. Everybody handles it differently and some better than others.
Nothing to be ashamed of...

Just look at Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain...they were mentally ill, and...

(all right maybe those two weren't the best examples...)

It's a "treatable" mental illness, however, so no worries...more than half our nation is on prosac and/or other things...and a good thing, too...

Cause otherwise us non-mentally ill people would have to kill 'em...(and don't worry about "getting better...")

Mental illness never goes away...you just treat symptoms, and live as long as you can, and grab as much happiness as you can...and remember...there are lots of "non" mentally ill people I hate much worse than mentally ill ones...

Like myself (after reviewing my answer to you question...Jesus! I need some sensitivity training...!
No! You are normal. Everyone has some health problems even movie stars. You just have some problems that is all. You are not crazy you can still get a job go to college. This medication may need to be changed sometimes it takes different meds. to get better. Ask for different meds. Your body chemisty may be a little different, and can reject the medication you are now taking. IT CAN TAKE UP TO ONE FULL Month to feel better.Think positive! You are not crazy!
