I read a book called Desperately Seeking Snoozin', and it helped me a lot. There is a reason for insomnia, you need to figure out what it is. Usually it's something troubling you.
Make sure you are burning energy during the course of the day. Exercise and pleasant recreation is important for a good night's sleep.

Try a really hot bath or shower before going to bed. I don't know why, but they put me right to sleep. Also, make sure your bedroom isn't overheated or has stale air. Clean, fresh sheets are a revelation...one of the great pleasures of life.

More importantly, don't use bedtime to go over the day's events. Devote time during your evening for this.

If all else fails, you can always change your brain chemistry by masturbating. It is an immediate release of emotional and physical tension that floods the brain with endorphins. I am being serious with this last recommendation, and am not promoting imprudent or lewd behavior.

5 minutes of breathing exercises before bedtime will help reduce stress. Take slow, deep breaths, through your nose and deep into your abdomen (rather than your chest). If you are doing this correctly your belly will expand and contract with each breath.

Spicy foods and large meals before bedtime should be avoided, as the resulting stomach activity may reduce sleep quality.

Keep objects that can be associated with stress out of the bedroom, and never use your bed as a place to do work

Regular exercise can reduce stress, aid relaxation, and improve your sleep, BUT exercise produces stimulants, so avoid strenuos activity just before bedtime.
