Sudden violent nightmares?

Question:
Out of nowhere, I started having insane nightmares about 2 weeks ago. I've had them almost every night, though one or two nights I've had a reprieve with no dreams at all. It's getting to the point that I'm afraid to go to bed...I've been staying up later and later, which of course leads me to waking up later, which makes me feel tired and cranky all day.

I can't figure out where they're coming from or why ~ everything else in my life seems to be going well...classes are over for the summer, I've got 1 year left before I graduate college, my boyfriend loves me and vice versa, I'm not going through anything traumatic, nor have I in the past few months...

What is wrong with me? How do I make it stop? I have a very comfy bed with soft sheets and fluffy pillows and I hate being afraid to go to sleep.

Answers:
That is your subconscious way of processing stress and change
I don't know how to fix your problem. But I will say that if you have ever had a traumatic experience, it can be haunting your dreams like now.

I hope you haven't been doing anything like watching scary movies or reading scary books or even thinking scary thoughts before you went to bed. I had a horrible dream about my mother, a bunch of other women, and me being burned alive the night after I watched the movie Carrie (based on the book by Stephen King). i wasn't even scared by the movie, but I had a horrible dream afterwards.

I wonder if your worrying about having scary dreams is causing you to have scary dreams.

At any rate, I hope you try to relax before hitting the sack (like having a bubble bath, listening to relaxing music, etc.).
First, try to figure out what's really causing the dreams, usually by taking a broad, figurative look at what the dream is about, (being pursued, being hurt, others being hurt, you hurting others, etc.) and looking at what's going on in your own life that might relate. Even some small stressor that you don't really think is a big deal could translate into some freaky crap in your subconscious.
As far as a quick fix, I really hate to suggest this, as it's a bad cure for anything, but for many people, myself included, pot (cannabis) suppresses dreaming. Or at least stops you from remembering your dreams. Not an ideal solution by far, but I thought I'd mention it.
