Does suicide and depression ALWAYS go hand in hand or can you have one without the other?

Question:
I mean, can you be suicidal but not be diagnosed with depression? I know you can have depression but not be suicidal, can't you? Do they always go together? How do you feel about suicide, do you think if someone's thinking of it they would have done it already if it was serious or do you genuinely feel any form of suicidal thought is dangerous?

Answers:
Suicide and depression are linked, but many people who are depressed do not commit suicide. Based upon experience, people who deal with depression are some of the emotionally strongest people on the Planet. For some of us, each day is another victory.

There are various physical causes for depression, and also various effective physical treatments. However, for many of us depression is a learned behavior due to similar repeated traumas. A classical example of this is the response to rape. First someone is raped, then the assailant is caught, and the situation goes to trial, where the victim is made out to be a disreputable liar.

There is also a difference between being suicidal and not wanting to live. Suicide, by definition, means taking ones own life. Not wanting to live leads to poor health habits, lack of awareness of danger, etc. and leads to early death due to medical conditions and accidents.

I highly recommend checking out the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill at www.nami.org. This is a group of people who are dealing with mental illness personally, or have dealt with family members who are.
to be diagnosed with depression you only need one of the 2 symptoms:
sad mood (to the extreme, of course)
and lost of interest
chronic severe depression, if untreated can lead to suicide
I don't know, let me go experiment with it a little OK.

Sometimes when we are depressed we would like to end it all. But, I think that is really just wishful thinking. Like, boy I'd like all those problems gone.

If you are genuine about suicide I don't think that you announce it to world. You just do it.

Depression is treatable with pills in the short term, if necessary, and with therapy to manage it in the long term.

You can be depressed and diagnosed with depression and not have SI ( Suicidal Idations (thoughts)). Now i personally have never seen any one that has SI and no depression. Now most people who try to kill themselfs are only doing so as a cry for help. Granted they my honistly try to kill themselfs its USUALLY just a cry for help. Now most people who have SI and full intentions on fullfilling thoes will normally get happy and give away things shortly before the actual act. Now just because someone doesnt wish to live doesnt mean they want to kill themselves. It takes alot more then what people think to kill themselves. That is why alot of attempted suicides with guns people will shoot through there jaw and miss the brain. they end up flinching just before. hope that helps
I generally think suicide and depression go hand in hand.. why would someone want to kill themselves if they were happy, and loving life?? There are however lesser cases of depression. Clinical depression is the stage at which suicidal thoughts are common. As for your second question, I think everyone at some point everyone thinks "ugg i dont want to be alive". However people who actually have a plan, or have come close to doing it, are usually serious... Melodrama plays a part in most close calls aswell because people get caught up in the moment.
I guess you could commit suicide without being depressed... but why would you want to?
Every person who has thought about it, attempted it , or done it was depressed...whether the depression was something long term or all of a sudden. My cousin's boyfriend blew his head off after an argument with her. Another woman hung herself in the backyard while her kids were at school because she was so strung out on heroine. I wanted to die at one time because my depression caused such a dark place within my mind..I think that most everyone who thinks about it or even tries can be helped. There's not one answer for all. For some, like me, it was a chemical imbalance. For some, it requires an understanding ear, like a therapist or good friend. Some, it means detox. For others, it means money management or a job, something do get them out of the hole...Yes, every kind of suicidal thought can be potentially dangerous. Not that most people haven't had a thought or two in their lives. When it rules your thoughts and interferes with your happiness long term. Are you asking because you have it on your mind. If so, talk to someone who will really listen..REALLY LISTEN!!!
Let Go and Take Hold

“For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’ ”

—Isaiah 41:13

A man who fell over the side of a cliff was hanging on to a branch that was starting to give way. Recognizing it was only a matter of time before he would fall to his death, he shouted, “Is anybody up there? Somebody help me!”

Suddenly Jesus appeared, leaned over the edge, and said, “Young man, reach out and take my hand, and I will save you. But first, you must let go of that branch you are holding on to.”

The man didn’t want to let go of the branch.

Jesus told him, “You must take hold of My hand and let go of the branch, or I cannot pull you up.”

The man paused for a minute and said, “Is anybody else up there?”

A lot of us don’t want to let go. We still want to hold on to a part of our old lives. But there has to be a moment in each of our lives in which we have recognized we are sinners and have asked for God’s forgiveness. Then Jesus Christ comes in. But we have to let go. Then some changes must take place.

The Bible says there is a spiritual blindness in all those who have not yet turned their lives over to Jesus Christ. So we must have our spiritual eyes opened. We must turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God (see Acts 26:18). As we yield to God and His will for our lives, then we will receive the forgiveness of sins. Then we will see the incredible benefits of making those changes.

But we have to let go of our branch and take hold of His hand.
dont listen to these idiots! if u have depression u have a chemical in ur brain that doesnt produce properly! its not just a way of thinking alot of ppl are born w/ it i think and just find out about it later on in lfe. and if u have depression u don't have to have suicidal thoughts.
I bthink a lot of people if not all have had the thought to suicide and can be thought of conceptually. Deppression is very hard to live wth and can lead to suicidal thoughts or actual suicide but sometimes does not. After you have been in a state where you are pushed to your limits for a lenth of time then it starts to wear on you and you start to lose interest in life because what you have to look forword too? Problems and stress? This eventually will break you down until you basically have nothing left and when you become desperate for change so badly but feel you just can't seem to change it for the better then what option is left?

Unfortunatley a lot of people get trapped in this downward spiral and I am one of them, but I coulndn't choose that route sometimes I am not sure why only I just couldn't go that way and had to seek out a better method to live by. So to answer your question I would say that suicide is not without depression or at least hardships that make us feel that we need relief to the pain that some choose to go there. Sometimes they would have done it already but sometimes people will cry out as a cry for help, but if they don't get any help it could be as they say the straw that broke the cammels back. We should NEVER take suicide lightly as it is always a cry for help, "trying to get attention" is true but not in the sence that most take it, attention as in this person needs help.

The chemical imbalace I have found is not the cause for depression I know that everyone can heal themselves by being honest, open minded and letting go of the negitive emotions that we often keep inside. The negitivity eats away at us and tells us there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
