Can you be bipolar AND suffer from BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) together?

Question:
I was diagnosed as Borderline/Histrionic about 2 years ago. My previous Dr. who I later saw after receving the diagnosis said I was Bipolar or had "mood disorder". Whatever the hell that is.

The more research I did on BPD the more it made sense to me why I am the way I am. Since my previous shrink & I didn't agree on my illness I went to 1 courtesy of the state , who diagnosed me correctly I think: but he retired shortly after & now I'm caught up in all this red tape trying to switch Dr's. Being unemployed doesn't help. Social services departments in Houston suck, & @ those damn "sliding scale clinics" you get what u pay for. Lame, counselors who don't even KNOW what BPD is. DON'T even mention Catholic Charities: I'm an Atheist! I know some of you people will mention than Marsha Linehan woman & DBT. Once again : I have NO JOB, NO insurance & have taken Every med under the sun!

Answers:
you totally can, I have bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, GAD, SAD and a few other things. it is common for someone that has borderline to also have another disorder long side it. DBT is great and once you are on your feet I would recommend going for it as its the best way to help with borderline. Can I just say I am an Atheist but guess what I work for the church, you see not all there are about god we are there as its a good place to help others. I work with prison offenders and there families. maybe you should look at the church not as a church at all but as a place you can get the help you need. not all are the same but some really do have people that know what they are doing.
take care good luck.
yes, you can. you can even suffer from more than one personality disorder.
yes you can suffer from both
I've been diagnosed as a Borderline and Schizoaffective. I asked the same question you did.

I've been on disability since 2001. If you can't work and your mental illness isn't getting better, maybe you could try getting on disability. Social Security's phone number is 18007721213. You already have documentation of your illness and a history of the meds you've taken. Get a short letter from your psychiatrist stating your diagnosis and how it affects your ability to work. With disability you get Medicare, which covers medications and doctors visits.

I hope that helps.
Yea, it's possible. Quite a few people are diagnosed with both bipolar and bdp.
I hear you. I Have the same problem BPD and Bipolar disorder along with other psyco diagnoses. Im unable to work due to it all AND the meds they saddled me with (somthing to wake u up, somthing to level u out, somthing to put u to sleep...Etc. Bipolar means sudden or violent mood swings.(why cant they speek laymens terms?) I wish I could help you more but I live in Tennessee and dont know much about Texas. I wish thare was some way you could move up here, thare are plenty of places to get help for your condition and peple who would help you pay for your Dr. and Rx costs. Good luck I hope things get better for you.
Yes, it is possible to have both. However, I have seen many clients be misdiagnosed with BPD when they in fact had Bipolar Disorder.
Yes. I am borderline and bipolar.
You can be diagnosed with both. Most people with bipolar are often diagnosed with other mood disorders as well. I live with bipolar and I don't need medication. Occasionally I have mood swings, but that's about it. My mom, however, has Bipolar II and has tried everything under the sun to help with hers including shock therapy, VNS (the new "hot thing" that only works with 20% of people they implant it in [they didn't know it only effected the small population when they implanted it in my mother]), depakote, well butrin, nerotin, seraquil, paxil..EVERYTHING. She's gained about 110 lbs since she started her medication (she currently takes 22 pills everyday -- waaaaay too much) but she's tried quitting and going through the withdrawal symptoms but none of her doctors seem to understand how to keep her off so many meds without her attempting suicide again.

My mother collects disability from her bipolar, because hers is so severe she can't work. She's 44 and already has medicare to pay for her high medication bills and treatments.

There's places to help you with your medical bills along with possibly finding a job. It was called the marge brewster center where i used to live, honestly i don't know what it is now that i've moved.

Progesterone as a neuroprotectant affects regulation of apoptotic genes.

Its effect as a neurosteroid works predominantly through the GSK-3 beta pathway, as an inhibitor. (Other GSK-3 beta inhibitors include bipolar mood stabilizers, lithium and valproic acid.)

I hope this leads you in the right direction heading towards restored health.
Yes, in a mental health diagnosis Bipolar Disorder would be on Axis I and Borderline Personality Disorder (or Histrionic) would be Axis II. They are commonly diagnosed together and many times other mental health diagnoses accompany them. Your doctor probably meant that you have a "mood disorder not otherwise specified" which means you didn't meet the criteria for a specific mood disorder such as Bipolar. I don't know much about Dialectical Behavior Therapy - it is fairly new so I wouldn't recommend it. Personality Disorders are very difficult to treat. I'm not from that area of the country and can't make referrals for you... but I wish you all the best.
