I am an LCSW in Chicago. What do I need to do to get into private practice?

Question:
Individual, group, and/or family therapy. Experience working with MI, MR, SA, autism. Worked with adults, families, adolescents, and children as young as 8 years old.

Answers:
1. Get an office.
2. Get a phone number.
3. Get on as many health insurance plans as you can.
4. Consider advertising...either by sending out notices to physicians and other mental health professionals, or formally via a form of media.
5. Make sure you have good malpractice insurance.
6. You'll also have to get a business license and pay quarterly taxes to the city of Chicago (I do this in Fresno).
7. Consider a "sliding fee" for fee for service clients, until your schedule is booked.
Contact the small business association to find out all the requirements and the department of mental health to be compliant with all rules and regs. Good luck.
