Are addicts supposed to give up all their addictions at once?

Question:
My father has been using drugs ever since I was a child. He uses cocaine and marijuana. The cocaine is what is scaring me. He uses a lot, several times a week. He's in his 50s and I'm afraid he's going to overdose one day.

I want to approach him about his cocaine use, but don't know if I should also mention his marijana use. I just don't feel the pot is really a concern. I'm more worried about the cocaine.

Is is necessary for an addict to stop all his vices at once (pot, drinking, smoking cigs) or should the worst of the evils be focused on first and tackle the other ones later?

Thanks.

As a once heroin addict my self I have learned that when you give up on any drugs you give up on them all at the same time no matter which is the more evil. If you are doing one drug and give up the other then eventually you will go back to that same drug that you started with. When you make your approach to him please do so with caution because people who are on cocaine will become violent.
They are all dangerous substances, but I would start with the hardest to quit. Sometimes though if someone stops an addiction they get more addicted to the other things like for him maybe the marijuana. Help him get off everything if you can.
well i smoke weed every now and then more now than ihave done for a while and i need a pick me up every so often and my pick me up of choice is coke.

it all depends on how much weed he's smoking to how much coke he snorts i would think. this is how it works for me and my bf anyway.

i would suggest you have a word with him because coming from you he may listen whereas if it was anyone else he may just say yeh, yeh i give it up. and not even bother to try.

say that it bothers you how much he uses and that you want your real dad for a change instead of a junkie.

id leave him with the cigs because he's gonna need something to do if he cant do the rest just be firm with him and tell him how worried you are about him.

if he doesnt listen then im sorry but hes not worth your worrying, so try to get him into a clinic and then leave it down to him. hes the adult and your his child. you shouldnt have to deal with this.

good luck!
well usually when someone stops bein an addict of somthing they end up getttin addict to somethin else
If you find out tell me.
My dad's and LSD addict and my sister's always smoking marijuana. And she's pregnant!! Which makes me worry worse.

I hope you're dad gets better.
A person has to admit to having a problem before they can begin to work solving it.

Your father has to want to stop using.

No one wants to be told that what they are doing is a problem. They will likely tell you to mind your own business or tell you they are not addicted and can quit any time.

So get some allies, like relatives, to support you. You may also want to investigate forced interventions. But most often this only works with children rather than parents.

I think that it depends on the person. If he can't do it all at once settle for the lesser of the two evils. But try to be understanding also. Addictions are hard to break. Don't go at him in anger, but in compassion. Maybe he wants to break the habit, you never know.
Yes he needs to oget entirely clean.
