Understanding of being taken to hospital against my will?

Question:
On the weekend i suffered a manic episode to which i had 3 police holding me down saying you're being detained under the mental health act. I was taken to hospital in handcuffs against my will and made to see a psychiatrist. Wasn't allowed anywhere. Thankfully i was allowed to go home as long as i stayed with my dad and calmed down. What is likely to be on my records? is this a section or is it just me being taken to hospital and that's the end of it? No one explained to me what was happening. I don't know what powers were enforced?

Answers:
If you were taken and held against your will you will have been 'sectioned' under the mental health act. This will be recorded in both your GP and hospital records. It was not necessary to get you to sign anything for this to occur legally within the act.
if you are a child, then you have no rights, and your record will be sealed.
they arent allowed to do that unless one of your friends or family member called them.
Visit the link below which should help answer your questions. As far as I understand, the police only have power to do what they did when you're out in public, at home they can only recommend you see someone but not force you too.

One in four people experience mental health issues at some point in their lifetime so you're certainately not alone!

Maybe speak to your doctor and get referred to a counsellor to find out what caused the flare up (if you don't know already) and talk about your thoughts & feelings to prevent it happening again!

I wish you all the best!
I thought being sectioned meant you were kept in the hospital against your will due to being mentally unstable. If you are under age then yeah, they can do that to you. If you feel you were violated, then file a complaint against the police.
well, its your freedom of choice to stop being cured by the hospital, your going to sign a consent stating that you dont want to be hospitalized but what ever happen to you is not hospital accountability and no more responsibility to you.
If you are under 18, then when you turn 18 you can have your juvenile records expunged so noone can see that episode. More than likely if you didnt get a court date or written a ticket of some sort then nothing will show at all. ever.
Were you given a section paper that you had to sign? If not then you were not sectioned. It is a legally binding contract between the patient and the Psychiatrist, your GP and a Social Worker. You can be on a police section which is used to get you to hospital and then it is up to the Psychiatrist whether or not you should stay for furthur treatment.. If you refuse this treatment h/she can then section you.
Depends what country you are in; generally it is very hard to "section" someone the way they used to. You usually need the consent of two people who know the person very well; one should be a parent or guardian or close family member; and ideally the other should be the family G.P. however, in circumstances where the person may be a danger to himself or others, as you might have been at the weekend, a policeman can consent to you being detained. the ideal situation is that you consent to your own admission.

That does not constitute a police record; but it will be on your medical records. you don't say if it is an on-going thing...but I think it might be worth your while asking to see a social worker, or even your G.P. who will be able to explain things better.
It will probably stay on your records medical and probably the police will also have a record of this event. However you were not arrested, you were detained. You do have not commited as criminal offence.

So you do not have a criminal record. That information is private so nobody else would have the right to know about it if you go for a job and need to give them permission to gain your records it will not show on a criminal search in term of the medical, as far as I know it will not show that you have been sectioned but it will show that you have some history of mental health. If you are very young you can put this behind you mental health problems are very common.

Myself as someone who has had serious mental health. My advice would be to do the following things it will help you stay well.

If you have been given medication make sure you take it for the time being in the future you can look at coming off it with the help of your doctor.

Don't eat junk food, eat as healthily as possible. make sure you have omega 3 and 6 in your diet.

Exercise. yoga would be very good for this as would tai chi chung. If you go through depressed periods exercise aerobically when you are feeling low. This will help balance the chemicals in your brain.

Don't drink excessively don't take drugs.

I know a lot of people don't want to know about meditation but if you learn to do it it will really help you with keeping yourself stable.

The powers used to detain you were the mental health act. I can't remember the ear but if you run a google you could learn more.

The authorities can basically use this law if you are deemed to be a danger to yourself or anyone else.

Really don't worry to much about any of this stuff just concerntrate on getting yourself well it is much more important.

It must have been very traumatic and I am sure it will take a while to feel ok again.

Anyway Best wishes.
police can put you under a section 136 which means if they have concerns about your safety or safety of others around you then they can arrest you and make you see a psychiatrist. this probably will go on some sort of reacord but would not affect your chances to do anything in the future so don't worry
