Sleep paralysis is a common symptom associated different sleep disorders and can be very scary when it happens.. You simple can not move!
(from sleep foundation site)
Sleep paralysis – a temporary inability to move during sleep-wake transitions. Sleep paralysis may last for a few seconds to several minutes and may accompany hypnagogic hallucinations.
The other you describe (the lady in red)is also common. Hypnogogic hallucinations - during transition from wakefulness to sleep, the patient has bizarre, often frightening dream-like experiences that incorporate his or her real environment.

i get this, too! i think it's pretty rare, but it runs in my family. it gets worse depending on what medications i am taking or if i am really sleep deprived. i've looked, there aren't many resources out there and doctors don't know a whole lot about it.but you are not alone!
this happens to me about 3 times a month. so, not that frequently. i find that it happens when i think about it, almost like my mind is forcing my body to do it!
i think it helps to meditate during this state and then in a few minutes, it is easier to move. that is how i get myself out of it.
hope that helps.
