How do you get rid of computer addiction?
Question:
I know this is not a healthy living habit and I do try to change. I go to several counselors; they don't seem to care. I ask my parents for help. Their answer: "How could you have computer addiction? It's not a disease." I even nearly threw my computer down a cliff but someone stopped me thinking that I was attempting a suicide.
At least I do have one positive side effect. I learn most computer languages online but I am not planning to become a computer programmer because I realize how overpowering computer programming is to have the power in taking over my life.
By now you're probably think I am crazy. I admit it too but I just need someone who has gone through addiction and overcame it to tell me how to stop mine. Thanks.
Answers:
you really have to take control again. set a limit to how long you are online for fun etc and how long you are on to study then switch the thing off. I may be am not the best person to say this as its 4 am in the morning here in the UK and I am still up on the darn thing lol. but really switch it off take a walk with out taking the laptop with you. get out do fun other things find something else you like doing. anything as long as ifs safe and its not the computer. take care
Step #1----Unplug your computer
Step #2----Have self-control
Step #3----Don't get on the computer
Hope i helped!!
=D
the first 3 days of stopping any addiction. you should start by cutting the hours you spend on your by a couple of hours. then keep increasing.
dookie- go to hell.
if you're not too crazy, think what makes you addicted to it? games? YouQA.com ? chat? disable those. erase programs. disable internet.
if everything makes you addicted, stop reading this!!
get magazines! get on TV. go out with friends. have a life.
don't think of your computer as an enemy. the more you try to deprive yourself, the more that you'd want it. time yourself in front of the computer.limit your time usage.
Go to the teacher and say the same . Ask her to arrange for all homework to be submitted on line. Many schools do it already ie. computer schools. You should get better grades with all the prereads you can do for every subject. No, stay on the computer... start your own brain a bit bye using this site more often. I have seen home work posted for answers .
There is such a thing as "computer addiction" & what you need to do, is devote more time on your studies, then reward yourself with a set amount of time on the computer each day. Let's say, you want to spend one hour on the computer each day. Set a timer to let you know when the time is up & sign off right away. Then do something that gets you away from the computer. Go outside to do something or go see friends, etc. Don't let the desire to be on the computer so much control your life. Life is way too short for that!
Ironically, the way I've snapped out of my periods of spending way too much time online is by meeting people who I started talking to online and going out and doing stuff in the real world with them. For instance, I met some people who like to go to Burning Man every year, and ended up going camping with them and making the trek out to the Nevada desert a couple of times. I also met my husband online by accident and.. well, okay, right at the moment I admit that we're both sitting at our computers, but we do some other things together too.
well if I had the same problem, I would give it to someone to hold on to and only let me use it for a set period each week, just put a password on it so they cant use it also.
I know its probably easier to say then do, but that would be the first step in trying to get over it.
and no I dont think your crazy as I know computers can be very addictive.
another piece of advice would be to leave your room and go to the library to study or a local coffee shop, I know thats what I do when I need to study, it gets you away from all the distractions around your room.
I don't know how to help you but to be honest, I don't think that you're crazy. Nope, not at all! ^_^
We've all got our vices!
Let's take a hard, cold look at your question: You ask - on a computer- at a computer site filled with answers addicts- how you can get rid of a computer addiction. That's like an alcholic going to a bar and getting drunk while asking everyone there how to stop drinking.
STOP.
STOP.
STOP.
Right now, after reading this answer. Turn it off. No more until you understand the compulsion. Tell the counselors and teachers that it's SERIOUS and if they won't listen find someone who will.
OFF now. If you can do that you are ready. If you can't you aren't.
I was addicted to my laptop a long time ago...then something happened. Now when I get on, I am on for only a couple hours, and I could care less if I am on or not...it's just for school, e-mail, personal matters, and computer games. What worked for me was my friend asking me to go kayaking with her. I did that and now I am like in love with kayaking. Ask me any day, even when I am on the computer, and I will go kayaking. Find something that you like more than the computer (except video games, that's addicting, too). You don't have to throw it down a cliff, just step away from it for a little bit. Try to gain some self-control. Once you have done that and spent a little time doing something other than that, then return to the computer with self-set limits.
Sounds like u got same addiction as I... Computers!!
I,m logging off for a while and getting on with my life. You can overdo things sometimes.
Little and often is my moto! (for a healthy life)

...and, ya not crazy at all - I'm the one who's nuts! lol : )))
One addiction tends to be replaced by another...smokers addicted to the nicotine gum or any gum, alcoholics/ drugs...Me- Myspace to Yahoo, ...you have to find another hobby until you reach a level of computer use you are comfortable with.
It sucks the life right out of you does'nt it ...cutting back is good or try giving yr comp to a friend /parents and go cold turkey...good luck.
