Answers:
When my grandpa was in the hospital being treated for bowel cancer, he was hallucinating as well. He was 83 at the time, and it has been three years and he has made a full recovery and hasn't had any hallucinations since then. For my grandpa, it was a combination of the medication he was on, the stress he was under, and post-traumatic stress disorder which was caused on by the war. It was scary for sure to see him acting like this, but I'm sure it was a hundred times scarier for my grandpa to actually have cancer and to go through with the surgery. Just be there for your dad and make sure that you stay calm. If you're not calm, it is just going to stress him out more, and he's not really in a good state of mind right now. Wait until he's off of the pain killers, and I'm sure he'll be okay.
it's the meds
I agree, very likely the pain killers. My grandfather died three years ago of pancreatic cancer; in the final weeks, he was on heavy pain meds, and he demonstrated numerous hallucinations and delusions while awake, and lucid dreaming and movement when sleeping. Frequently, he awoke in the middle of a hallucination...
It's likely this behavior will diminish when he's off the medications. Good luck.
pain killers cause you to feel euphoric and not pay attention to details. I had knee surgery and i was prescribed percoet i can't say that i had halluconations. You usually will not have hallucinations unless you do LSD, PCP, or Mushrooms or something i don't that think that a 78 year old is likely to use any of those drugs.
dude. prozac sucks just to tell u
it could be the pain pills or a side effect of anesthesia.i'm betting the either because older people have problems with anesthesia andpain pills,a way to get it out of your system is to cough.pat him on the back on right and left side to clear his lungs while you get him to cough.and get those pain meds.changed.my dad had this after bypass surgery.
there are pills for low sodium,so don't rule that out, either.good luck!
