I took xanax for a couple years. Then my insurance ran out and I had to stop cold turkey for lack of money. I suffered vomiting and nausea for 6 straight weeks and lost about 25 pounds. I felt like I was near death. Now I take Ativan 2 mg for anxiety only as needed - not every day. You definitely have an addiction that is hard to beat. You will probably have to take a prescription drug like Phenagen for that sick feeling or something similar to relieve the withdrawal symptoms. Counseling won't help much when you have a physical addiction.
If Lexapro is not helping make sure you give it about 2 months before you switch to another medication. It takes that long to get into your system to do anything. After that switch to something else for anxiety until you find the right one. It took me 5 years to find the medication that works for me. Good Luck!
I think the best thing to do is to go to the doctor regularly and see what they can do to help you feel better.
I spent a period on Lexapro, but it did nothing for me; was like taking a placebo. Have you and your health adviser discussed Zoloft?
In my opinion, most anxiety is caused by a person focusing on the problems in their life rather than the solutions to those problems. I would recommend getting into a good Bible teaching church where you can find God's promises and Scripture that will help bring tranquility and peace to your thinking. Focusing on self, people and problems cause everyone anxiety. Change your focus to Christ and live your life in the light of eternity, that will make this life and all of it's problems seem trivial. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him shall have everlasting lift." Then study His word for promises and grown in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Without God, there can be no lasting peace. There is a void that can only be filled by Him.
Talk therapy. And, maybe a med change.
