Answers:
i've been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder and depression.

i've been on zoloft for years to manage it and this works for me.

like another answer, SAD is seasonal affective disorder which is depression or mania brought on by the seasons, usually it's found in areas that have long dark polar winters and 24 hour summer sunshine.

social anxiety disorder is difficult to describe. i wanted to be invisible and not have anyone notice me. i felt that i was being evaluated and judged by every person i came across and i imagined that they thought i was stupid or not worthy of being where i was. i shied away from public situations and was pretty much a hermit. i even had difficulties driving as this meant i would sit in traffic where people were going to see me and hence, think about me.

it sounds dumb to describe it, but there you have it.

i'm not sure if you can pass it on. i feel, more than anything, mine was brought on by my childhood environment. i ended up being a bit troubled as a teenager and this led to drug experimentation and then to a horrible crystal meth addiction. (i've been clean for three years now though) the meth just amplified the depression and anxiety i already had, to unbearable levels.

zoloft works wonders for me.

This site should give you some insight on the disorder.
Social Anxiety Disorder is not hereditary, however Bipolar is.
It can be very debilitating and it can be passed on to children or it can skip generations just like many other illnesses.
SAD is seasonal affective disorder which is totally different from social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder, also called social phobia, is a psychological condition that causes an overwhelming fear of social situations that require interacting with or performing in front of others. It is different from being shy, introverted, or experiencing the normal anxiety before public speaking—the fear is that you will somehow embarrass yourself with what you say or do in public. Social anxiety disorder causes relentless fear, often beginning days or weeks before an event, and often triggers physical symptoms such as blushing, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty concentrating. Social anxiety disorder significantly impacts a person's daily life. It may even cause withdrawal from social activities and missed work or school.

Although the exact cause of social anxiety disorder is not known, it may run in families either as a genetic factor or as a learned response developed after experiencing a particularly humiliating situation.
As more and more behaviours and conditions are found to have a genetic basis, I do believe SAD can be genetic -- not all the time though. Sometimes, the environment a child was raised in can bring it on.

This is in the family of Depression and Anxiety. The victim has great difficulty mingling with other people, being in crowds, not able to leave the house. They feel nervous, scared, unable to relax and just talk. There are medical treatments but they need to be in therapy as well, go to the website indicated by the other person. They know more about it now than 10 years ago so you should get a better understanding.
