Why do I feel the NEED to take a nap in the middle of the day.?
Question:
until later in the evening
Answers:
You've already answered your own question. You have a child (school age or younger?), you are in school, and I expect you have household responsibilities too. What's wrong with taking a little siesta? You can recharge your 'battery' very well with as little as a 20-minute rest period. It's been proven in studies that a little break during the day can improve productivity at work; why not at home too?
It's also possible you are a 'night' person, which obviously conflicts with what other people think is 'normal' - that is, able to be more productive during the morning.
When I was your age, I needed more sleep - but I had two children under the age of three and was working 30 hours a week. I needed to schedule naps in, believe it or not.
So let's start with that: what is your schedule? You don't have to answer me - but write down what you do, when you go to bed, when you get up, etc. Look at your list.
What chores can you switch from morning or afternoon to evening, when you are most alert? Is there any bit of your life you can streamline to make it easier?
Also important: do you eat breakfast, and if so, what do you eat? It is vital that you don't overindulge in sugary breakfast stuff early in the day, because the quick boost from the sugar doesn't last, and can leave you feeling crappy when your blood sugar drops.
You may find (I did) that eating some protein (like eggs, ham or nuts - even peanut, if necessary) and carbs (such as whole wheat toast, oatmeal with nutrasweet, etc) in the first half hour of your day will energize you. But do eat lunch, even if it is just a microwave-baked potato and some vegies, or a bagel and cream cheese. Don't forget, a little fat in your diet makes everything taste better, and you really do need some to keep your energy level up.
Drink enough water, that is, 8 oz every hour or two, and try to keep your caffeine to the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee - but don't stop altogether if you don't want to!
Remember that colas tend to have a lot of salt, and that can dehydrate you, making it harder to concentrate and stay awake, even if they have caffeine in them. And sugared ones can cause your blood sugar to flux. You will know you are getting enough water when your urine is only faintly colored.
Keep heavier carbs (like pastas) for supper - they may make you more drowsy if you eat them for lunch.
Summary: Give yourself permission to rest and eat regular meals. It's more than okay; you can't be everything you want to be; mother, student, (potential presidential candidate) if you don't.
I hope this helps you.
After lunch, the body naturally slows down somewhat, especially if it is forced to digest food while being expected to work like it did in the morning. Take a 20 minute power nap to refresh yourself, THEN tackle your afternoon tasks.
That happens to me a lot too, I'm tired in the afternoon, but not late at night.
Do u sleep a regular 8-10 hours a day? If not, that's the reason. Ur just tired.
Lots of people slump mid afternoon. Several countries even have naps (siestas) during the day because of this. Also Dr. Pepper was developed to help people stay awake and more productive during the war when they needed everyone to work hard.
There are several reasons that you could be tired such as depression, dehydration, lack of exercise or vitamins. Next time you get tired, drink a glass of water and take a walk. I have 3 kids and watch 3 others (for a total of 6). So tired doesn't work for me. So that is what I do to get through. You will be surprised what a 10 minute walk will do for you.
Maybe your not getting enough sleep at night. If you are able try going to bed early er at night. And eat a light lunch.
This is natural.Workers in China are given a nap allowance of 30 minutes after their lunch. Many mid east countries allow the same and even have two half shifts a day.they start at 7 till 12.They go for the lunch and nap break and get back at 4 and they work till 7.This is to put your mind in rest .People need to energize their batteries during the day.
However feeling sleepy all day may be a cause of ill health such as low blood pressure.if it is only in the afternoon and specially after lunch and full stomach,no need to worry, else consult a physician.

I power nap 30 minutes everyday no to be arrogant but all great people in history take power naps and many latin country do it. I also get between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night ..enjoy it .
Hello, Tammy.
Try getting out and going for a walk, this will sweep away the drowsiness and help. Try it.
Also look at your diet. Are you eating a good amount of fruit and vegetables?
Some people just are night people and not morning people. I know some people who find mornings quite difficult and they really spark in the evening.
Also are you getting a good 8 hours uninterrupted sleep?
Do you go to bed at a reasonable time?
All these issues can make a difference to sleep patterns.

taking a nap in the middle of the day is a common habit by most people, it is not a sign of mental disorder per say, if you have a good night sleep, you can change this habit gradually by changing the external cues of your environment by changing the place, activity at the time of your nap.
