I'm scared to sleep?

Question:
I have had nightmares for nearly 4 years now, they started a while after I returned from Iraq in 2003. I know everyone claims PTSD when they have nightmares and bad memories, but I don't know if that is what I am suffering from. Is it normal to have nightmares after seeing things like that? Or does having the nightmares mean I suffer from PTSD?

Its not always the same, sometimes its just sounds, or just hazy images and i feel scared, or like I know my buddy needs help but i can't get to him, and no matter how bad he is hurt or even if I know hes dead, I try to get to him but cannot.

Sometimes its specific events, and I swear every night I see them, its like I see them more vividly then when it actually happened, like they burnt into my mind and they just wont leave.

I had a dream once that I was ambushed and we tried to fend off the attack, and right in the middle of the fight, everything disappeared and I was in my living room crouched behind the sofa.

One time I had a dream of a firefight just past An Nassiryia in Iraq, everything was exactly the same until a bus got hit with a TOW missile, and as I watched the bus explode and burn, its was like I knew everyone from my whole life I knew was in there and they were all dying and I had no way of stopping it, I couldn't even move to protect them from the hit. I've only had this dream once, but it woke me up from a dead sleep and I didn't sleep for nearly 3 days.

I need to know how to make this stop, its getting worse and its getting harder to close my eyes at night because I sometimes tremble at the thought of what I might see when I fall asleep. I need help, what do I do, and what does that dream mean?

Answers:
Your mind is trying to cope with severe emotional trauma- you need to talk to someone who is trained to lead you out of this stalled coping state. Look up your local VA hospital for that,(you've been in combat- they will bend over backwards to help) and also the VFW post, There are a lot of vets who've gone through this and can understand what you are saying without you having to censor yourself . Being with others who have been through a similar hell and sharing your stories and nightmares , and hearing about theirs and how they coped will help more than just about anyhting else.. By the way- Thank you for doing what I could not (diabetes disqualified me for service)

Does sound like PTSD. You cannot get over it by yourself. You need to get appointment with your military mental health dr.
anxiety

my doctor refused to treat me so I beat it myself

alcohol will give you peace

and then when you have beat it the consumption will subside

it is the only way these a**hole docs will not give u meds if you have one beer a day they are idiots
My first guess/assumption would be PTSD. Have you tried therapy and or a support group? You can begin with your doctor and explain this to him/her. Good luck and God Bless.
First of all, as horrible as this is for you, it is normal and you are not alone. If you are comfortable with it, you should call a pyschiatrist and get evaluated. They may prescribe you sleeping pills and maybe an anti-anxiety medication, none of which you would have to be on for the rest of your life. It may very well be PTSD. PTSD is treatable and managable as long as you are in therapy or at least talking to the right people.

Best of luck to you and I have faith that with a little personal effort, you can overcome this. :)
Seek professional help.
and thats all I can say.
good luck
I would say PTSD. My friend has it too. All I can say, is that I am praying for you and owe you my life, for your service to our country. Thank you so much for everything you have done. If you ever should need to email or im someone, I am available. If I were you, I would talk to the local VA office and see if they can set you up with a military psychologist or someone along those lines. Again, thank you so much for your service. America would not be what it is without people like you.
I can't tell you what your dream is about but my father is a Vietnam vet. He wasn't the same when he came back. He was a chain smoker (he didn't smoke before he left) and he could not sit still plus his hands and legs would shake. He now has Parkinsons and I'm sure that his experiences contributed to it.

As far as sleep; you can't deprive yourself. You need to talk to somebody but maybe a shrink isn't a good idea. A pastor, close friend, or maybe somebody in the family but you definitely need to get it out.
I take Imipramine just for nightmares. I used to dream that my friends were eaten by wild dogs and I could even smell their dead bodies in my sleep. That's just one example. I went to a psychiatrist and he prescribed Imipramine. I took it for about a month and my nightmares ended. I was afraid to go to sleep also.

I sincerely hope that you have not gone 4 years without treatment of any kind. You must consult a professional to end your misery. Thank you for your service to our country. Good Luck!
Sorry, I can't intrepret your dreams for you but I can tell you the obvious, you need some help soldier, please go to the VA clinic and ask for some help...get something to help you sleep and also a counselor to help interpret your dreams and help you through this.. you can ask them but I believe, at least some of what you are suffering is called PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Good luck and thank you for giving of yourself to help defend our country. God bless you sir.
hey i dont exactly know but you my brother cam back from irack like 6 months ago and he has that too he has night mares and stuff but i asked him and he said that you can talk to him he wen threw the same thing so he told me to give you his e-mail so here it is its jc_infantry@yahoo.com so hope it helps
Dear Fire Rescue. It is so important that you seek professional help. It sounds to me that it is PSTD. Getting to the doctor will allow you to talk about what happened and get it off your chest. If you need them the doctor will prescribe meds to reduce your symptoms. PSTD is a real condition. Your brain is behaving differently than normal humans because of the stress you lived in iraq. Wish you the best. Argentox2@yahoo.com
im sorry to say but im afraid you do have PTSD, and i know because my literature teacher's brother was in the vietnam war and he had some sleeping problems as well.
ive been told that PTSD cant be treated gradually with time, and that its better if you go to a doctor. usually they will give appointments for psychotherapy and along with some antidepressants such as prozac and zoloft.
be safe and i hope you take this advice :)
First let me say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR DEFENDING OUR COUNTRY Because I'm a 16-year-old girl and can't do that. WE LOVE YOU!!!
*Ahem* alright, now to the question...
I went through this phaze where I continuously dreampt (<-did I spell that right?) that I was being chased by some guy who was going to hurt me then at the end I'd either get caught by him (whoever the heck he was) or else would fall into 'the abis' and die. I know it's kinda stupid compared to what you're having to deal with, but it haunted me for ages and I gradually grew afraid of the dark because I wasn't sure if the dream was forshadowing something, if the guy was waiting outside my room or if he would jump at me if I went downstairs for water.
Until just recently I began reading my bible more (you know, I just 'didn't have time for it') but in the index I was able to find certain verses which tackled the problems I was going through: Fear, anxct, the burden I was carrying in forcing myself to go through what I really wasn't able to. I found these three verses and when I had a hard time sleeping (most of the time) I'd just recite them in my head memorizing them and they really helped:

"Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" Matthew 28:20

"Come to me all of you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest" Matthew 11:28

"...And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying. Neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away." Revalations 21:4

All these are the promises of Jesus and when you say the and really believe them, you're hearing Jesus comfort you:

He's gonna be with you and those you dream about for longer then forever, no matter what happens. (Matthew 28:20)

He'll give you the rest you and others need if you go to him, trusting he can (Matthew 11:28)

He's promising that no matter what happens so long as you believe in him, in the end you will be fullfiled, content, joyfull/happy and will never have to fear for those you love again. (Revalations 21:4)

I hope this helps a little, it sure did for me... I'm hardly afraid of the dark now and I haven't had nightmares for ages. I really really hope you can sleep better soon, I'll be praying for you.
And if you have anymore questions or need any more verses you can email me at
