How do you know whether you have a mental illness...?
Question:
Answers:
The only way to know for sure is to go to a doctor mental illness covers a vast amount - depression is mental illness as is psychosis - I assume you think you are somewhere in between. While it may be frightening to go see about it - it will get worse if not treated and that is more frightening. Facing it is half the battle and there is so much help out there. It is unlikely you have too much to worry about, perhaps you have low self esteem or somthing similar - go to a counsellor they will be able to help, and a good one will suss whether you need to go to G.P.
Good Luck
Just read my questions - you can measure yourself up that way.
If you laugh, you got issues.
I laugh til I cry.
So are you taking neurological then?
Yeah, I agree with Perry... I just answered one of his questions. You know which one it was Perry ;-)
Do you see dead people?
go to the dr.! they are the only ones that can tell your for sure and that can help you.
you get diagnosed by a shrink
thats how i found out
You really can't know by yourself.
If you are suffering, at the least, tell your closed family member. Ask if mental illness runs in your family.
Ask people you trust if they think you have an illness.
The good news if you go to a doctor is that you can have a solution for your problem, and you'll feel better.
go to a doctor and tell them about your family medical history and yours.
I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and it took me a long time to recognise what was wrong, as these things tend to develop slowly and not overnight.
I went to a doctor having read an article in a newspaper about mental illness, where I was diagnosed.
The article claimed, 'at any one point, 1 in 4 people is suffering from some form of mental illness. So ask your 3 best friends. If they are fine, it is you.'
I guess the point is that it is very common and not something you should be ashamed of. Go to your doctor and discuss what you think is wrong and hopefully they will give you good advice and the support and assistance you need.
Good luck!
It sounds as though while you're already worrying whether something is wrong and have some mental boogeyman of what it might be, things are still copable. So understandably you're worried about involving some one else in your inquiries in case it all goes out of your control and just plain wrong.
The problem with self diagnosis through books is that symptoms of mind illhealth exist within and are reactive to a context - this can get teased out through talking to someone who knows about this stuff - AND different symptoms can 'look' like each other but be unrelated. (For example, 'voices' or 'odd beliefs' are NOT always about schizophrenia or psychosis - these experiences can also be found under a diagnosis of PTSD or personality disorder. Or acute anxiety.)
Whatever is happening for you, evidence shows that earlier intervention leads to a better recovery, and this might involve formal health care or using web based advisory sites - BEWARE!! there are some REALLY dodgy sites out there.
If you're not comfortable with meeting with someone or talking over the phone about this stuff, a good site to start is
www.sane.org.au
Good luck.
A couple of symptoms on their own are pretty normal, a mental illness is defined by a cluster of specific symptoms that significantly impact the persons life and ability to function.
it could be depression or stress.. both of those will make you wonder if your going around the twist...but i have always heard that if you think your crazy then most likely your not.. if you think your sane.. than watch out.. now that dont go for those folks that knowt they have a illness because they have been to a doctor .. got on meds and seen the differnece in them selves
People are different. Perhaps u r mistaking differences between u and others around you as mental illness. If u r dissatisfied with what u see perhaps u can work on traits u do not like. If not a good place to check further is your family doctor-good luck
I think you might be hypochondriacal ! The only way you could get a diagnosis is to start by seeing your GP and expressing your concerns and giving your symptoms. A vague question like this on answers is not going to help.
