Is it wrong to take antidepressants?

Question:
I am marginally depressed; enough so that a therapist I have been seeing recommended anti-depressants. I know I can get along fine without them, but I am also pretty sure that if I got on them that my grades would go up and I would have an easier time "getting ahead". It would be an easy matter for me to lie to a general practitioner and get a prescription for Adderall while I am at it. My question is, is it wrong for me to rely on prescription drugs to get ahead when I know many of my classmates are and, in so doing, changing the grading curve to my disadvantage? I am at a relatively well-renowned Law School surrounded by very intelligent people, what should I do?

Answers:
stop contemplating and take the pills you'll feel much better and have a clearer head
yeah, anything that messes up with your mind is not good, because then you cannot control your own thoughts, moods, etc. only if you have a serious problem, yes, otherwise you should discipline yourself to shelter your thoughts from depression, you can do it, we humans are stronger with our minds if we need to. just discipline yourself. maybe take some herbal suppliments for that, like I think St. John Wort, or valerian root.
KILL YOURSELF!

lol... not really?? it is not a good thing to think about if yuou are truely despressed! maybe respect yuour body more and you will be less bored with meaningless life
ok i take adderal 25 mg twice a day and adderal when u get off it your mind will not know what to do you will have like a weird feeling because u are usally relying on the adderal my suggestion is if you just started taking them just take it during college then get off fast they get addicting i know thery make you a wake and makes you feel good but trust me ull loose appetite in food and you will be staying up late which is not healthy
By your therapist having you on the Meds. Then It's by far NOT wrong, Take Your Medication this is best for you and others, Even if you feel better, Stay on the Meds. Until You are advised by the doctor not to be on anymore. When You take, You do better things work out better, You have NO Problems, Once off you may find that you are having Problems or causing problems for others, So STAY ON YOUR MEDS.
Being in Law School, is stressful. I beleive the stresses that you may go thru may trigger depressed symptoms. I believe by your going for proffessional help with your issues of depression are to be honored. Some seem to be under the wrong impression of anti depressants..thinking it is a negative, but if your going thru depression, how would you might otherwise succeed in law school without the anti depressants? I would imagine you would be on a down hill slide, and thats a tough consequence to a future you may have dreamed about. while anti depressants are there for functionality, not a source to hinder ones thoughts, as suggested, but to enable clear and more precise thought processin a positive way.
Drugs generaly should be avoided...easer said than done. In our present life style, stress due to school, financial situation, the war, the uncertainty the way America is going, Bad personal relationship, etc. it seems that in many cases the proper medication can be of help to get over the "tough times". If the depression is caused by none of these but from metabolic changes in your system then other types of medication can be of enormous help in certain people, however, it must be pointed out not in all people. The doctor is key here. He must prescribe the proper medication for the type of depression he is presented with. Unfortunately it has been my experience (and I detailed drugs to doctors for many years) that at least 50% of the G.P.s do not know how to use psychiatric drugs correctly. They try one type and if it does not work they go to another and so on. A psychiatrist who specializes in dispensing medication knows which ones to use and how they interact one another (terribly important issue). Depression can generally be reduced or cured with the proper medication but it takes time. If you need medication do not hesitate to take it especially if it will improve your school work. I was a Senior Vice President at a very large electronic firm and I had heavy problems thrown at me every day. I am not ashamed to say that I took an anti-anxiety drug when needed and it helped me enormously. It cleared my mind and helped me make difficult decisions. No alcohol taken with the drug because then I would go to sleep and be out for several hours. A knowledgeable doctor will help you find the proper medication that will surely help you in school. Nothing to be ashamed about. Want to bet how many students in your school are on prescription drugs of one kind or another? Medication may help but do not get addicted.
If your depressed - even a little - the playing feild isn't level. Medication can just bring you up to the level everyone else is existing on. I know it sounds weird. But the thing is that depression is a huge problem and can effect everything you do - it lowers your ability to function they way you are supposed to. Medication would just give you the same chances that non-depressed people have. So go ahead - if you're therapist is recommending it you should listen - he or she is very well trained and know's what they are talking about.
All that matters is your state of consciousness, not grades. Whatever you do, base it on that. medications can affect you in negative ways as well.
