Is it true the most who have borderline personality were sexually abused in the past?

Question:
They say that a great percentage have been abused at some point in their lives. I was also wondering if some forget the abuse and cant remember it till a much later date?

Answers:
Yes. In fact when I am diagnosing someone and I see they are a cutter, I always ask about some form of abuse or trauma. Sexual trauma or abuse is a popular one with BPD, but I have found that any trauma or abuse is common in someone with BPD. I have found that almost always, probably 9 out of 10, if I see a female and she is self mutilating or abuse drugs, and she has some form of trauma, she had BPD. It is also common that even though someone self mutilated themselves in the past, but who are abusing drugs now, it is the same thing. Often people with a substance abuse problem will go from self mutilation to cutting. What is neat in people with BPD, once you treat the abuse, the symptoms of BPD often go away and at least, they are greately reduced. The problem with finding statistics or percentages like you are talking about, is that they are not common because the APA and DSM do not want quick diagnoses made based on meeting the criteria of sexual abuse and self mutilation. As far as them forgetting them to a later date, this is indeed a common factor. It's a basic defense mechanism called repression. This also happens with people with post traumatic stress disorder who have been sexually abused, due to the fact that when describing what happened to them, they describe it as the trauma happening to someone else. These are probably one of my more favorite disorders to treat because they seem complex but are kind of simple when you break everything down. They are challenging, but seem to have a very good prognosis.
No, that's not true.
I believe that most people with mpd were sexually abused. And some people do not remember the abuse until later in life. I think this happens because they are not able to deal with it at a younger age.
Yes, sadly it is very true, some people are born with a gene that predisposes then to BPD, just as a lot of people have cells that when exposed to sunlight develop into skin cancer. Childhood abuse combined with this gene causes the BPD to develop.BPD is very similar to Bipolar and the treatments are the same.
There are many other situations but this a main factor.

And yes some people who are abused or had any traumatic event , can block it from memories until years later, sometimes forever. It is a protection of emotions that the mind is not capable of dealing with.

You can find information about BPD by going to NAMI and looking up information.
I am not sure of the excat statistic but I believe its around 75% of those with BPD have had some sort of sexual trauma in their past.
It is possible for someone who has had the sexual trauma to "block" the abuse. It is not that uncommon.

Though in my practice the persons I have seen diagnosed with BPD who HAVE not been a victim of sexual trauma often have a Mother with symptoms of BPD or other Axis II disorder. When you learn that type of push and pull with unstable relationship you often become that as well.

If you feel you have BPD find a good therapist who is skilled in Dialectial Behavioral Therapy(DBT). They will help you be able to focus in your "rational mind" and make good decisions and choices while allowing you to aknowledge your emotions without judging yourself. DBT along with light medication has been shown to have a great rate of sucess for those with BPD.

Best of luck to your and yours!
There might be a higher percentage of borderline personality disorder among those who have been sexually abused, but that doesn't in any way mean that most people with BPD were sexually abused. I don't know the answer to your second question.
All i know is environment matters. definitley sexual abuse contributes to causiing it in a victim.. many patients at a hospital their for Eating Disorders borderline, bpd etc were sexually abused as children

YES, unfortunately it's totally possible to have a "flashback" if you will, of a past memory. Its not highly likely because it's a traumatic event and those events are hard to Forget kat
but some traumatic events can naturally be dissacoiated in your brain with out you trying to... kinda like the brain lockin the memories up in a chest and throwing away the key to protect itself from the effects of the horrible events, HOwever the key is still in the brain and those memories CAN be unlocked if that key is used to unlock them

most them memories unknown to the mind of sexual abuse will not come back to haunt them unless there was extreme violence and graphic graphic stuff happenin that sent the person into shock and the mind subconciously begins to dissacociate them ?corrct me if im wrong umm its not proven but it's what I have learned from school I cant confirm they wont
